The Man Who Told Cristiano Ronaldo Never to Touch Milk Ronaldo vs. Haaland: Football’s Milk Rivalry

At 41, the greatest footballer alive still trains like a machine. His former personal chef just revealed the unusual philosophy behind it.

Somewhere between his fifth major trophy and his 969th career goal, Cristiano Ronaldo made a quiet but radical decision — one that flies in the face of decades of sports nutrition advice. He banned milk. Completely. Not just whole milk. Not just dairy-heavy smoothies. All of it.

The man responsible? Giorgio Barone — Ronaldo’s former private chef during his Juventus years in Turin, and the architect of one of the most meticulously calibrated diets in professional sport.

Milk Is “Against Nature” — That’s the Argument

Barone’s reasoning isn’t rooted in lactose intolerance or allergy. It’s rooted in something more primal: observation of the natural world. In a recent interview with Covers.com, he laid it out plainly.

“Humans are the only animals that drink the milk of other animals. No other animal drinks milk after three months. Calves don’t drink milk after the age of three months. It does not exist in nature. Only human beings continue to drink milk up to 30, 40, 50, and 60 years — and in my view it is wrong.” — Giorgio Barone, Ronaldo’s former personal chef

The logic is blunt, even provocative. Milk — consumed by over 80% of the world’s population and recommended by nutritionists as a protein and calcium powerhouse — is, in Barone’s view, a habit humans were simply never designed to maintain past infancy.

So what does Ronaldo drink instead? Espresso. Black. Or plain tea. On the rare occasion he wants something creamier, alternatives like almond milk, oat milk, or rice milk are allowed. But a cappuccino with dairy? Off the table, literally.

What Ronaldo Actually Eats in a Day

The no-milk rule is just one tile in a much larger mosaic. Barone described Ronaldo’s daily routine as balanced, disciplined, and built entirely around whole, unprocessed food.

  • Breakfast — Avocado, eggs, and black coffee. Zero sugar, without exception.
  • Lunch — Chicken or fish, always paired with vegetables. Carbohydrates come from vegetables only — no pasta, no bread.
  • Dinner — Light. Usually a fish or meat fillet with vegetables.
  • Superfoods — Liver, heart, and organ meats make regular appearances. Barone calls them “superfoods” and praises their iron density.
  • Never — Milk, refined sugar, pasta, bread, or flour-based carbohydrates.

Ronaldo vs. Haaland: Football’s Milk Rivalry

For all its logic, Ronaldo’s no-milk stance puts him in sharp contrast with Erling Haaland — the other contender for “most physically intimidating footballer on the planet.” Haaland has publicly championed raw milk as part of his diet, crediting it for his legendary energy and recovery.

Ironically, the two agree on the thing most people find more shocking: organ meats. Both include liver in their diets. Barone approves of Haaland’s organ-eating habits without reservation — it’s only the milk he takes issue with.

Diet Is More Important Than Training — 60 to 40

Barone frames the entire philosophy with a single analogy that has become something of a mantra among elite coaches: “The human body is like a car. You can have the best car in the world, but if you put the wrong fuel in the engine, it is going to struggle.”

He puts diet at 60% of an athlete’s performance equation, training at 40%. It’s a controversial ratio in a world that fetishizes gym culture. But Ronaldo — with a body fat percentage of around 7% at age 41, well below the 8–12% typical of a Premier League forward — is a living argument in its favor.

The diet isn’t the whole story, of course. Ronaldo also uses cryotherapy chambers and hyperbaric oxygen therapy for recovery. He famously removed Coca-Cola from a press conference table at Euro 2021, a gesture so powerful it reportedly moved the company’s market value. He trains up to four hours daily.
