Life as SABAHAN

Sabah is a beautiful state located in the northern part of the island of Borneo in Malaysia. Life as a Sabahan is a unique experience that is shaped by the rich culture, diverse communities, and stunning landscapes of the state.

Growing up in Sabah, I was exposed to a rich cultural heritage that reflects the state’s diverse ethnic communities. Sabah is home to over 30 different ethnic groups, including the Kadazan-Dusun, Bajau, Murut, Bajau, and many others ethnic. Each of these communities has its own distinct language, customs, and traditions that are celebrated throughout the state.

One of the most important cultural events in Sabah is the harvest festival or “Kaamatan” in the Kadazan-Dusun language. This festival is celebrated annually in May and marks the end of the rice harvest season. The festival is a time of feasting, dancing, and traditional sports, such as the “sogit” or bamboo pole climbing.

Aside from cultural celebrations, life in Sabah is also shaped by the state’s stunning landscapes. Sabah is home to some of the most biodiverse forests in the world, including Kinabalu Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park is home to Mount Kinabalu, which is the highest peak in Southeast Asia, and is a popular destination for hiking and nature lovers.

Sabah is also known for its beautiful beaches and islands. The Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, located just off the coast of Kota Kinabalu, is a popular destination for snorkeling and diving. The park is home to five islands, each with its own unique attractions, such as coral reefs and sea turtles.

Despite the state’s natural beauty, life as a Sabahan can also be challenging. Sabah faces a number of social and economic issues, including poverty, unemployment, and access to basic services such as healthcare and education. These issues are particularly acute in rural areas, where many communities rely on subsistence farming and face limited economic opportunities.

Despite these challenges, Sabahans are resilient and optimistic people who are proud of their state and its heritage. As a Sabahan, I am grateful for the unique experiences and opportunities that life in Sabah has given me. Whether it is celebrating cultural traditions or exploring stunning landscapes, life as a Sabahan is a truly rewarding experience.
