I believe that humans are in this unenviable position: Nature requires women to conceive and house babies not only till birth but until they can contribute to society, while men can choose to help or not, from human conception to grave.

Men have seized control of this world through force and war for thousands of years, rendering women and babies side-thoughts, unimportant politically, but not economically.

You have to raise babies in some way and it always requires money be spent. Men don’t like this, they want all the money and resources for whatever it is they want for themselves in any given moment (from war to race cars — sometimes a kid), but Nature has fixed things this other way.

Yes, some men help. Some men don’t. Babies are born or killed before they are viable as a woman can afford to raise, feed, house, clothe, educate, and care for each child. Each child becomes a support or a burden to all of the society they touch, given their raising or lack thereof for many political, economic, social, philosophical, and religious reasons.

No, this is NOT enviable by any means.

But, trying to prohibit or enhance a woman’s choice in this matter, as Mr. Will suggests in the link above, has solved nothing.

The checkered path each human walks from conception to grave given the dedication or lack thereof, not just of mothers but fathers as well, remains. We can try to deal with this issue by leaving the choice of birthing (and abortion only deals with birthing NOT RAISING a child) to each state. We can plod through another fifty long years as we see how this works out for the children who manage to not only be born but critically, raised, will happen if we attend to it or not.

Raising children is something little in our society really deals with except to assign women and children the official role of burden and men the role of savior of all, in spite of the FACT that both are simply a child’s parents but were someone else’s child, to begin with. Key: we have no choice in these conception and raising arrangements, though how we meet those needs is important. How we meet these needs is up to each of us. However, in the USA, the die are cast. The Rubicon has been crossed.
