Why So Many People Are Surviving Instead of Thriving

“The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need.” (Psalm 23:1)

Have you ever looked at your life and wondered, Is this all there is?

You wake up, go to work, pay bills, handle responsibilities, scroll through social media for a few moments of relief, and then do it all over again the next day. Life becomes a cycle of survival.

Yet deep inside, something tells you that you were created for more.

I believe that feeling exists because God created every human being with purpose.

When God created us, He did not simply create us to exist. He filled each of us with gifts, abilities, talents, creativity, and unique callings. He designed us with the resources we need to fulfill our purpose in the world.

So why do so many people struggle to thrive?

What Happened?

I believe two things happened.

1. We Were Wounded

Life leaves scars.

Some of us experienced criticism, rejection, abandonment, betrayal, or disappointment. Others grew up hearing messages that made us question our worth and value.

These wounds often produce fear, shame, and rejection.

Fear Makes Us Shrink

Fear convinces us to stay small.

It tells us not to take risks, not to speak up, not to start the business, not to write the book, not to share the idea, not to step into leadership.

Fear’s primary goal is self-protection.

The problem is that a life controlled by fear eventually becomes a life confined by fear.

God never intended us to live imprisoned by fear.

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7)

Shame Makes Us Hide

Shame tells us that parts of ourselves are unacceptable.

Instead of presenting our authentic selves, we carefully construct versions that we believe others will approve of.

We hide our gifts.

We hide our stories.

We hide our struggles.

We hide our dreams.

Yet God never called us to hide. From the very beginning, shame entered humanity through the Fall, but God’s redemptive work has always been about restoring us to wholeness and freedom.

“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 8:1)

Rejection Makes Us Play Safe

Many people stop pursuing opportunities because they fear being rejected again.

A failed relationship.

A failed business.

A job application that was declined.

A dream that didn’t work out.

Over time, rejection teaches us to avoid risk.

But avoiding risk often means avoiding purpose.

You cannot fully embrace God’s calling while constantly protecting yourself from disappointment.

2. We Adopted a Survival Mindset

The second challenge is that we absorb the mindset of the world.

Our culture often teaches us that life is about achievement, accumulation, productivity, and survival.

Success becomes reduced to earning money, paying bills, climbing career ladders, and making it through another week.

While these things are important, they are not the ultimate purpose of life.

Many people are functioning but not flourishing.

They are surviving but not thriving.

They have learned how to earn a living but have forgotten how to live.

As a result, there is often a deep inner restlessness.

Something feels missing.

The soul longs for more.

What If God Has More for You?

What if your current reality is not the end of the story?

What if God’s plans for your life are bigger than your fears?

What if the dissatisfaction you feel is not a problem to suppress but an invitation to explore?

Scripture tells us:

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

God’s intention is not merely survival.

His desire is that we walk in the fullness of who He created us to be.

Two Keys to Thriving

1. Allow the Holy Spirit to Heal You

Healing is not optional if we want to live fully.

Unhealed wounds often become hidden limitations.

They shape our decisions, relationships, and opportunities without us even realizing it.

The Holy Spirit specializes in healing broken hearts.

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” (Psalm 147:3)

As God heals fear, shame, rejection, and pain, we become freer to embrace our identity and purpose.

We stop living from our wounds and begin living from our calling.

2. Learn to Hear God’s Voice

One of the greatest gifts God gives His children is His guidance.

Many people pray, but few intentionally create space to listen.

I once read about a man who took a long drive to a prayer garden. He carried only his Bible, a notebook, and a pen. He silenced his phone and sat quietly before God.

Instead of filling the entire time with words, he listened.

As he listened, he sensed direction regarding relationships, career decisions, and next steps for his life.

This story resonates deeply with me because I believe God still speaks.

He speaks through Scripture.

He speaks through the Holy Spirit.

He speaks through convictions, impressions, wisdom, and the quiet guidance He places within our hearts.

The writer of Ecclesiastes reminds us:

“Go near to listen rather than to offer the sacrifice of fools.” (Ecclesiastes 5:1)

Sometimes the breakthrough we need comes not from talking more, but from listening more.

Why Purpose Matters

Purpose Brings Fulfillment

Think about a time when you completed something meaningful.

Maybe you helped someone.

Created something.

Solved a problem.

Served a need.

There is a unique satisfaction that comes from living in alignment with purpose.

Nothing else truly replaces it.

When purpose is absent, we often look for fulfillment elsewhere. We may seek comfort in food, shopping, entertainment, social media, status, or endless distractions.

Yet these things can never satisfy the deeper thirst of the soul.

Jesus said:

“Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.” (John 4:14)

Purpose is connected to serving others and participating in God’s work in the world.

Purpose Brings Direction

Living according to God’s purpose is like swimming downstream.

There is effort involved, but there is also grace.

You find yourself moving with God’s design rather than constantly fighting against it.

The opposite is striving.

Striving feels like swimming upstream.

Every step is exhausting.

Progress feels painfully slow.

The difference is not the absence of work. The difference is alignment.

Stop Playing Small

Recently, I watched a video where someone argued that Christianity can lead to low self-esteem.

I understood some of the concerns because religion has sometimes communicated messages that encourage people to shrink themselves, see themselves as worthless, or focus only on their failures.

But when I look at Scripture, I see something different.

I see a God who created human beings in His image.

I see a Father who calls His children beloved.

I see a Savior who considered humanity valuable enough to die for.

If you were worthless, Christ would not have gone to the cross for you.

You matter.

You have purpose.

You carry gifts that the world needs.

Romans 8:19 says:

“For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed.”

Creation is waiting.

People are hurting.

Families need healing.

Communities need hope.

The world needs solutions.

And many of those solutions are hidden within the gifts God has placed inside ordinary people.

Perhaps even inside you.

Allow God to Lead You

Psalm 23 paints a beautiful picture of God’s leadership:

1The Lord is my shepherd;

I have all that I need.

2He lets me rest in green meadows;

he leads me beside peaceful streams.

3He renews my strength.

He guides me along right paths,

bringing honor to his name.

4Even when I walk

through the darkest valley,

I will not be afraid,

for you are close beside me.

Your rod and your staff

protect and comfort me.

5You prepare a feast for me

in the presence of my enemies.

You honor me by anointing my head with oil.

My cup overflows with blessings.

6Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me

all the days of my life,

and I will live in the house of the Lord

forever.
