Do I use ‘Later’ or ‘Latter’?

These words differ by a single letter and have completely different meanings. Read on to know more.

LATER:

This is an adverb which refers to a time in the future or a time that is after the present moment.

I will clean my room later.

She will be acting in a play later this month.

‘Later’ can also be used as an informal way of saying ‘goodbye’. It is a shortened version of the phrase ‘see you later’.

“Later!”, said Wilson as he rushed out of the classroom.

LATTER:

This is an adjective used to describe something that occurs or is situated towards the end, rather than the beginning.

The latter half of the movie was interesting.

The cultural program will be conducted towards the latter part of the academic year.

It is also used as a pronoun when referring to the second of two people, things or groups that were previously mentioned.

My brother was offered a bike or a laptop. He chose the latter.

The athletic teams of France and UK were to camp here. The latter hasn’t arrived yet.
