Warning About Deceptive Relationships and Marriages.
Warning About Deceptive Relationships and Marriages.
Many people seek marriage with sincere intentions, but Scripture also warns believers to exercise wisdom and discernment because not everyone who appears trustworthy has good motives. Criminals, fraudsters, abusers, and manipulators can use dating websites, social media, and other platforms to exploit vulnerable people. The Bible repeatedly warns that evil often disguises itself as good.
Beware of Wolves in Sheep's Clothing
Jesus warned His followers:
"Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves." (Matthew 7:15)
While Jesus was speaking primarily about false teachers, the principle also applies more broadly: evil people often hide behind an attractive appearance, kind words, or a religious image. A person may claim to love God while secretly pursuing selfish or harmful motives.
The devil's purpose is "to steal and kill and destroy" (John 10:10). Those who willingly practice evil often imitate deception, manipulation, and lies rather than the character of Christ.
Biblical examples of deceptive and dangerous people
Delilah (Judges 16) Delilah repeatedly pressured Samson until she discovered the secret of his strength. She accepted payment to betray him, showing how affection can be used as a tool for exploitation.
Potiphar's wife (Genesis 39) After Joseph rejected her advances, she falsely accused him, demonstrating how lies can destroy an innocent person's reputation.
Jezebel (1 Kings 21) Jezebel manipulated others, arranged false testimony, and orchestrated the death of Naboth to satisfy evil desires.
Absalom (2 Samuel 15) Absalom won people's hearts with flattering words while secretly plotting rebellion against his father.
Gibeonites (Joshua 9) They disguised themselves with worn clothing and false stories to deceive Israel into making a covenant.
Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5) This couple presented a false appearance of generosity while secretly lying to God and the church.
Judas Iscariot (Matthew 26) Judas appeared to be a faithful disciple yet betrayed Jesus for money.
Simon Magus (Acts 8) Simon outwardly professed belief but sought spiritual power for selfish gain, revealing an unchanged heart.
Herod the Great (Matthew 2) Herod pretended he wanted to worship the newborn Messiah, but his true intention was murder.
False apostles The apostle Paul warned that false workers disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, just as Satan disguises himself as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:13–15).
Biblical signs that call for caution
The Bible encourages believers to watch for patterns such as:
Persistent lying and deception (Proverbs 12:22).
Manipulation and flattering speech for selfish gain (Romans 16:18).
Love of money and greed (1 Timothy 6:10).
Anger, violence, or abusive behavior (Proverbs 22:24–25).
Refusal to accept correction (Proverbs 15:5).
Hypocrisy—appearing godly while denying God's ways (2 Timothy 3:1–5).
Pressuring someone into secrecy, isolation, or hasty commitments instead of acting with honesty and patience.
The Bible calls believers to be loving, but it also calls them to be wise. Pray for discernment, examine a person's character over time, seek godly counsel, and do not ignore repeated patterns of deception, manipulation, or abuse. Genuine love is patient, truthful, selfless, and produces good fruit. Jesus said, "You will recognize them by their fruits" (Matthew 7:16).
Marriage should be built on truth, integrity, mutual respect, and faithfulness to God—not on manipulation, lies, fear, or exploitation. Those who consistently practice deception and abuse should not be excused simply because they claim to be religious. Scripture urges believers to "test the spirits" (1 John 4:1), walk in wisdom, and trust God to reveal what is hidden in every heart.
The Importance of Wisdom Before Marriage
Marriage is one of the most important covenants God established. It is not merely based on attraction, emotions, or words of affection, but on truth, integrity, and godly character. The Bible repeatedly encourages believers to exercise wisdom, patience, and discernment before entering a lifelong covenant.
Many people present themselves as trustworthy while hiding serious patterns of deception, addiction, abuse, criminal behavior, or persistent immorality. Scripture warns that a person's true character is revealed by their actions and the fruit of their life, not merely by their claims (Matthew 7:16–20).
Why wisdom is essential before marriage
Before making a lifelong commitment, it is wise to know a person's:
Character and reputation.
Family relationships and patterns.
Spiritual life and obedience to God.
Financial responsibility.
History of honesty and integrity.
Whether there is evidence of violence, abuse, criminal behavior, or ongoing destructive habits.
Whether there are unresolved addictions or persistent immoral lifestyles that they refuse to abandon.
Having a difficult past does not automatically disqualify someone from marriage. The gospel teaches that people can genuinely repent and be transformed through Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17). The key biblical question is whether there is clear evidence of repentance, changed conduct, and a life increasingly marked by the fruit of the Holy Spirit rather than ongoing, unrepentant sin.
Ten biblical examples of ungodly character affecting others
Samson ignored wisdom in relationships, and his choices brought devastating consequences (Judges 16).
Nabal was harsh and foolish, bringing distress to his household until God intervened (1 Samuel 25).
Ahab and Jezebel led their family and nation into greater wickedness through their influence (1 Kings 21).
Amnon allowed sinful desires to control him, bringing grief and division to David's family (2 Samuel 13).
Absalom spread deception and rebellion that deeply affected his family and the nation (2 Samuel 15–18).
Ananias and Sapphira united in deception instead of righteousness (Acts 5).
Judas Iscariot concealed greed before eventually betraying Christ (John 12:4–6; Matthew 26).
Delilah used manipulation and betrayal for personal gain (Judges 16).
Herod the Great concealed murderous intentions behind flattering words (Matthew 2).
False teachers appeared outwardly righteous while inwardly leading people astray (Matthew 7:15; 2 Peter 2). The Lasting Consequences of Marrying an Irresponsible and Ungodly Man
Marriage is God's covenant, designed to reflect love, faithfulness, sacrifice, and mutual care. A husband is called to love his wife as Christ loved the church (Ephesians 5:25), provide for his household (1 Timothy 5:8), and bring up his children in the instruction of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4).
When a man persistently rejects God's ways and refuses to repent, his sinful choices can bring great sorrow to his wife and children. Scripture warns that "bad company corrupts good character" (1 Corinthians 15:33) and that a person's life is known by its fruit (Matthew 7:16–20).
An irresponsible and ungodly husband may neglect his God-given responsibilities by refusing to provide for his family, abandoning his duties, wasting money, living selfishly, or placing every burden on his wife. Instead of protecting his home, he may create fear, instability, conflict, and emotional pain.
Some men continually practice lying, manipulation, slander, gossip, anger, sexual immorality, addictions, or abusive behavior. Rather than nurturing their wives and children, they make home life miserable through constant conflict and neglect. Instead of comforting their family when they are sick, discouraged, or in need, they may become indifferent to their suffering.
Children who grow up in such an environment can be deeply affected. They may struggle with fear, insecurity, broken trust, or unhealthy relationship patterns. Although every child is responsible for his or her own choices before God, children often learn by observing the behavior they see every day. This is why parents are commanded to model godliness and teach their children the ways of the Lord (Deuteronomy 6:6–7; Proverbs 22:6).
The Bible therefore encourages believers to exercise wisdom before marriage. Do not be rushed by pressure, loneliness, or outward appearances. Take time to observe a person's character, seek godly counsel, pray for discernment, and look for consistent evidence of honesty, humility, responsibility, self-control, and genuine faith in Christ.
A godly husband is not perfect, but he is teachable, repentant, truthful, compassionate, and committed to loving and caring for his family. Building a marriage on godly character rather than charm or empty promises brings a strong foundation for both husband and wife and provides a healthy example for future generations.
The consequences of ignoring warning signs
When a person consistently lives in deception, violence, abuse, addiction, criminal behavior, or unrepentant immorality, those choices often affect an entire household. Families may experience fear, broken trust, financial hardship, legal problems, emotional wounds, and instability. Scripture teaches that "bad company corrupts good morals" (1 Corinthians 15:33), reminding believers that close relationships profoundly influence our lives.
A biblical approach
Women and men alike should not be pressured into marriage out of fear of being single or because of age. Waiting with wisdom is often better than entering a harmful marriage. Proverbs repeatedly praises patience, discernment, and seeking wise counsel before making major decisions.
Pray for God's guidance, observe a person's consistent character over time, seek counsel from mature believers, verify important information honestly and respectfully, and look for evidence of genuine repentance where there has been past wrongdoing.
Marriage is intended to reflect Christ's love—marked by truth, faithfulness, sacrificial love, and holiness—not deception, manipulation, fear, or abuse. A wise decision before marriage can spare years of sorrow and help establish a home where both spouses and children can flourish according to God's design.
