The Story of Olympus
From microscopes and thermometers to a pure-play MedTech leader, **Olympus Corporation**’s evolution can be understood across five major phases:
Phase 1 — Foundation & Early Expansion (1919–1990s)
Founded in 1919 as Takachiho Seisakusho, Olympus began as a manufacturer of microscopes and thermometers. Over the following decades, the company built deep expertise in optics, establishing an early foothold in both scientific and medical fields.
This strong optical foundation enabled major innovations in imaging, spanning consumer photography (cameras) and medical technology (endoscopy) in the following decades. Growth during this period was largely organic, supported by limited M&A activity. A notable early acquisition was KeyMed (UK) in 1987, which strengthened Olympus’s endoscopy distribution and expanded its medical presence in Europe.
Phase 2 — Globalization & Medical Expansion (2000s)
This phase was characterized by more aggressive M&A activity. During this period, Olympus expanded its medical devices portfolio, particularly in surgical and therapeutic areas. The acquisition of Gyrus, a UK-based medical device company, for $2.2B was a good example of this.
However, during the same period, the company also made several opaque offshore acquisitions, which were exposed in 2011 as part of a major scandal.
Phase 3 — Portfolio Reshaping & MedTech focus (2010s)
After the scandal, Olympus began streamlining its portfolio, a process that was later accelerated. The company divested several non-core businesses, including ITX, its Diagnostics business, and a few other smaller units: doubling down on healthcare and establishing medical technology as the company’s core focus.
Phase 4 — Major Restructuring (2020–2024)
This period was defined by a decisive structural transformation, including two major divestitures:
- Imaging Business: Olympus sold its long-standing camera, lens, and recorder business to **Japan Industrial Partners (JIP), forming [OM Digital Solutions Corporation](https://www.linkedin.com/company/om-digital-solutions-corporation/)** and effectively exiting its 84-year legacy in consumer imaging.
- Industrial & Scientific Solutions: The company sold its Industrial Imaging division (**Evident Industrial) to [Bain Capital](https://www.linkedin.com/company/bain-capital/)** for $3.1B.
Alongside these exits, Olympus continued to strengthen its medical portfolio through targeted acquisitions, including Medi-Tate (therapeutics) and Odin Vision (diagnostics).
Phase 5 — A Pure-Play MedTech Company (2025–Present)
Since appointing **Robert J. White** as CEO, the company has undergone a major leadership restructuring, bringing in MedTech leaders to guide the organization.
Today, Olympus operates as a focused MedTech company, continuing to expand through strategic investments (**Swan EndoSurgical Inc., [Noah Medical](https://www.linkedin.com/company/noahmed/)) and collaborations ([Canon Medical Systems Corporation](https://www.linkedin.com/company/canon-medical-systems-corporation/)**).
With over $6B in total revenue (1 trillion JPY), the company is now centred on two primary segments:
- Endoscopic Solutions (60%)
- Therapeutic Solutions (40%)
