An eye for an eye, evil for evil, is toxic.

It is in our human nature to repay evil for evil, an eye for an eye, but it is in God’s nature to forgive.

What should we do? We can go with what Jesus says:

You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’ But now I tell you: do not take revenge on someone who wrongs you. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, let him slap your left cheek too. (Matthew 5:38–39)

Jesus points us to God’s nature:

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your friends, hate your enemies.’ But now I tell you: love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may become the children of your Father in heaven. For he makes his sun to shine on bad and good people alike, and gives rain to those who do good and to those who do evil. (Matthew 5:42–45)

God’s nature softens our hearts; it keeps His Holy Spirit near to us. Doing what the Bible tells us in the above Bible verse means that we are walking according to the Holy Spirit, and not according to our human nature(flesh).

What I say is this: let the Spirit direct your lives, and you will not satisfy the desires of human nature. (Galatians 5:16)

This is what the Holy Spirit does in us:

But the Spirit produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, humility, and self-control. There is no law against such things. (Galatians 5:22–23)

Our human nature opposes the Spirit of God in us, and there is a constant battle going on:

For what our human nature wants is opposed to what the Spirit wants, and what the Spirit wants is opposed to what our human nature wants. These two are enemies, and this means that you cannot do what you want to do. (Galatians 5:17)

Let’s go with God and trust Him with our lives. We shall never be disappointed!
