I Thought Views Meant Money Until Medium Proved Me Wrong

When I first started writing on , I believed one thing:

More views meant more money.

It sounded logical. If hundreds of people clicked my article, then surely dollars would follow. Right?

Wrong.

One day, I checked my stats with excitement. My article had views, reads, and even a few claps. I smiled, expecting my earnings to look different for once.

But when I opened the earnings tab, reality hit me hard.

Almost nothing.

That moment changed how I understood writing online.

The Mistake Most New Writers Make

Many beginners think Medium pays for views.

It doesn’t.

Medium mainly pays writers based on member reading time. That means the people reading your article must mostly be paying Medium members not random visitors from Facebook or WhatsApp.

That was my biggest problem.

attracting Medium members instead of random clicks

Slowly, things started improving.

Not overnight.

But little by little.

The Truth Nobody Told Me

Medium is not just about traffic.

It’s about connection.

A smaller audience that truly reads your work is more valuable than thousands who click and leave after ten seconds.

Now, whenever I see low earnings, I no longer panic immediately.

I remind myself: Every experienced writer once started with almost nothing too.

Views alone do not define your success.

Keep improving. Keep publishing. Keep learning the platform.

One loyal reader can change everything.
