How do you explain the Internet to a 5-year-old?

When Netflix plays Gabby’s Dollhouse on your telly and there is an intermittent power outage affecting your Wi-Fi router before the backup kicks in… Just how?

My toddler loves a good story. So I told her one — of bits and bytes. She listened — well, at least until everything was restored to order.

I explained how electrical pulses (on/off) pave the way for the 1s and 0s that zoom across copper wires or fly at the speed of light through fiber-optic cables (like Superman), to be broadcast through your router across the household for the TV to pick up.

“Ma, what is broadcast?” Good question.

I drew a parallel — just like when a teacher is talking to the entire class — 0s and 1s can be sent from one point to many.

“So, all I have to do is send 0 and 1 — and I can watch my show?”

“No, dear child. The video on the screen is made of colored dots called pixels. Say Gabby’s hair is black in this part and her dress is pink in that part — those color values are mapped to numbers like the ones you learn at school.”

“And these numbers are changed to bits — 0s and 1s — and then sent in groups over wires. Our telly gets such video details from the Netflix server and replays Gabby’s hair and dress on the screen.”

“Oh, I get it — a server is like the person who takes orders at restaurants and serves food.”

“Perfect! In this case, our telly requests a video and the server sends it to us. And when the modem/router goes off, the ability to ask and receive is lost. In short: no video.”

“Hey, Ma!”

“Yes?”

“Video’s back on.”

I was saved by MerCat and Pandy Paws having a deep conversation about potions. Order had been restored, well, at least for now.
