Weekly Security Token Japan (Mar 9— Mar 15)

Here are some highlights from the Japanese security token / RWA market last week.

日本語版はこちら(note)。

As Founder & Chairman of Japan Security Token Association, I lead a collaborative community dedicated to advancing the business adoption of security tokens and, more broadly, Real World Assets (RWA) in Japan.

In Japan, regulatory clarity emerged early, enabling the launch of numerous projects issuing tokens backed not only by traditional assets like real estate and corporate bonds, but also by a wide range of alternative assets. As a result, Japan is increasingly playing a leading role globally in this space. This blog “Weekly Security Token Japan” would provide a concise weekly digest highlighting key news from the previous week.

Regional Banks Seek to Revitalize Local Economies with Digital Currencies (March 10)

Moves to introduce blockchain-based digital currencies are spreading among regional banks in Japan. Higo Bank and Kagoshima Bank, both under Kyushu Financial Group, are considering the adoption of the tokenized deposit “DCJPY” in collaboration with DeCurret DCP. Shizuoka Bank has also conducted proof-of-concept experiments using token-based payments, confirming their potential use for internal settlements and remittances. By linking these initiatives with local specialty product sales, NFTs, and municipal benefit payments, regional banks aim to expand local economic ecosystems while strengthening their competitiveness against megabanks and emerging financial players.

Juroku Financial Group will begin intermediating orders for digital securities through its subsidiary Juroku TT Securities, becoming the first regional bank group in Japan to do so. Order data will be routed through Tokai Tokyo Securities’ system and connected to the Osaka Digital Exchange (ODX), with Tokai Tokyo responsible for settlement and securities transfers. The system linking the two firms was developed by BOOSTRY, affiliated with Nomura Holdings. Looking ahead, Juroku FG is also considering handling digital securities backed by assets such as real estate related to Gifu Prefecture.

Mitsui & Co. Digital Asset Management completed fundraising for the first digital securities fund on its alternative investment service “ALTERNA” managed by an external asset manager. The product, “AEON Mall Shinrifu Digital Securities,” will have its underlying real estate assets managed by Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Real Estate Investment Management. Trust functions are provided by Alterna Trust, while distribution is handled by ALTERNA, establishing a framework that offers issuance and distribution infrastructure for digital securities to external asset managers. This enables external AM firms managing high-quality assets to enter the retail digital securities market without building their own infrastructure.
