The Obvious I, Eventually

In the summer of last year, I stumbled upon Needle Mythology. What started with Think Once More — A Journey with The Montgolfier Brothers quickly turned into something more. That compilation became the soundtrack to my summer, and it also turned out not to be the only release on the label with that rare ability to sink deep under the skin.

With The Obvious I, Ed Dowie delivers a quietly remarkable record that sits somewhere between ambient, choral music and minimal electronic pop. It’s music that whispers rather than insists, yet remains surprisingly precise in its shape and intent.

The sound falls somewhere between Brian Eno and Bronski Beat: spacious and weightless, but also melodic, even gently hook-driven. It’s an unusual balance, giving the album both distance and immediacy at the same time.

What’s striking is how detached it feels from any specific moment. I could easily imagine loving this record had it been released in the mid-80s, the mid-90s, or as some half-forgotten outlier in between. There’s something quietly timeless about the way Dowie handles sound and melody.

That sense of timelessness is closely tied to the album’s vulnerability and eccentricity. But neither should be mistaken for inaccessibility or fragility. These songs are carefully constructed, clear-eyed in their production, and unexpectedly inviting, no matter how idiosyncratic they may seem at first.

It’s that combination — restrained, off-centre, yet open — that makes The Obvious I linger. Not a record that demands attention, but one that slowly, almost imperceptibly, finds its way under your skin.
