Hulu’s Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair is Still Sitcom Gold

Malcolm in the Middle premiered on FOX in the year 2000 as a part of its unconventional lineup of sitcoms. This network gave us The Simpsons, Married with Children, and In Living Color. As FOX’s answer to Rosanne, Malcolm in the Middle followed the life of a lower middle class white family in a modest suburb in “Anywhere USA” through the lens of Malcolm (Frankie Muniz) the genius boy located right smack in the middle of his siblings Francis (Christopher Masterson), Reese (Justin Berfield) and Dewey (origially Erik Per Sullivan). Malcolm’s parents, Hal (Bryan Cranston) and Lois (Jane Kaczmarek), were wildly in love with each other and not ashamed to show it. Hal is an open-hearted, optimistic, and slightly ditzy father, while Lois is determined to raise her boys to be decent men, no matter what. Every single family member is flawed while also having some genius in them. The series was wacky, zany, and often stupid, with a down-to-earth center and hilarious physical comedy that made it like nothing else on TV at the time. The reboot lives up to the original seamlessly.

Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair is a four-part limited series that takes place 20 years after the original series ended and finds Malcolm as a single dad, all grown up, working for a non-profit and raising his daughter, Leah (Keeley Karsten, The Fablemans). He’s successful, and he has a girlfriend, Tristan (Kiana Madeira, The Flash), who adores him. His parents’ 40th anniversary is just around the corner, and they want Malcolm to come to their party, but he’s avoiding them. The series’ main conflict remains the same. Malcolm is selfish, his family is codependent and overbearing, and it feels fantastic to be in this world again.

I came to Malcolm in the Middle via streaming when it was on Netflix. I’m a Breaking Bad fan, and during the pandemic, I rewatched it and wanted more of Bryan Cranston, so I started watching Malcolm in the Middle. The series was just the kind of stupid, silly, heartfelt humor I needed at the time. The mix of styles of humor on Malcolm in the Middle was perfect, and they were not afraid to use realistic situations and exaggerate them into comedic gold. You have Hal, a lower-middle-class white guy in a dead-end job, who through his genius son Malcolm’s friendship with fellow Stevie (Craig Lamar Traylor) who Malcolm meets when he’s placed in the Gifted and Talented class at school and Hal becomes friends with Stevie’s father Abe (Gary Anthony Williams, The Boondocks) who is better educated, has a job with higher status and pay but the two men bond through their son’s friendship. Abe invites Hal to a poker night with his friends, a group of Black men who are all doctors, lawyers, and white-collar professionals; this situation speaks volumes and provides ample ground for great comedy. Abe and the guys are still friends with Hal and have one of the best scenes in the reboot that I rewatched it three times.

Bryan Cranston is the foundation of the reboot. His love for playing Hal is obvious, and he just luxuriates in this role. This man is one of America’s finest actors, and seeing him just eat up the scenery is pure joy. Hal is still with his beloved Lois (Jane Kaczmarek), who eases right back into her role as the mother determined to raise good men with ease. In a TV world full of sitcoms where kids ran rings around their parents with little negative consequences, Malcolm in the Middle was refreshing because Lois did not take any sh*t from them kids. By the end of the show, she had five sons whose job it was to find ways to drive their parents crazy, and watching Lois get the upper hand in this series full of men was satisfying and still is. The chemistry between Hal and Lois is still cooking and makes the reboot special.

It’s wild to see Malcolm all grown up yet having the same quirky style he had as a child on the show. We still get direct address to the camera from Malcolm, and we also get straight to the camera from his daughter, Leah (Keeley Kersten, The Fabelmans), who has been sheltered by her father but has inherited his anxiety as well as his brilliance. Francis has aged really well and is still with his wife Piama. Reese lives near home and is the one character who felt forced. Dewey is a concert pianist on tour and is now played by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark (Fargo), who does a great job. Fantastic casting. Jamie is all grown up and in the military, and there is a new sibling, Kelly (Vaughn Murrae, The Way Home), who counters their older brother, Reese, hilariously.

Sitcoms were created for the radio during the Great Depression and focused on immigrants and working-class folks to make the people hardest hit feel better during a challenging time. As the world becomes more fraught every day, laughter is an elixir. Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair has this lovely, just plain stupid humor, coupled with truly heartfelt and deeply relevant truths lying just beneath all the silliness. Yes, it’s funny, slapstick, sometimes stupid, but always funny, with this underlying authenticity that draws the characters closer to the heart. Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair made me laugh, surprised me, touched my heart, and left me feeling better than I felt before. We could all use a little joy right now.
