About “Friend of Medium” Package

A response to Medium

The truth.

Today I received an email from Medium talking about their new Friend of Medium Package. And in case you have no idea what that is, allow me to let Google summarize:

To which I replied the following:

Friend of Medium is 3 times the price of a regular plan. I think the added benefit vs. the regular plan is not enough to justify this increase.

The plan needs more benefits. How about a feature where Friends of Medium had a VIP option where readers could pay more to access special content.

This would allow writers to actually control how much money they make on the platform a little more.

Personally, I have lots of stories and experiences as a business person but I’m not interested in jumping on some Medium content treadmill for arbitrary amounts of money…

…divided out in some clandescent way at the whim of Medium. There is a vagueness to the whole thing that is disconcerting to me.

I don’t like the lack of control for creators, and I don’t like some of these poor business choices you are making.

It feels like you are in a desperate battle against a glut of A.I. generated drivel, and are struggling to react to it. I’m still a paying member, who has lost motivation to post regularly.

Between the lack of transparency with monetization, the hard left-leaning political favoritism, and the radical reactionary changes being made, I do question my place on the platform.

We’ll see what 2024 holds, but just a bit of simple advice. Do with it what you will, but it should have been obvious already…

…the Friend of Medium Package is too light for a 3x price increase. You need to sweeten the deal.
