Why Nobu’s arrival in the Algarve matters for Portugal’s property market

Luxury hospitality brands don’t often bet on new territory unless they see something worth betting on. That’s what makes Nobu’s decision to build in Portugal’s Eastern Algarve worth paying attention to.

The brand, founded by chef Nobu Matsuhisa, actor Robert De Niro and film producer Meir Teper, is planning a major development at Monte Rei, the 1,000-acre golfing and country club near Vila Nova de Cacela.

Construction is due to start in 2027, with an opening planned for 2029. The project will add around 21,000 square metres of Nobu villas and branded residences to the resort, plus a 100-room hotel and a signature Nobu restaurant.

Monte Rei is no stranger to wealthy international buyers. Its Jack Nicklaus designed golf course is rated Portugal’s best, and the resort has long been an established draw for ultra high net worth individuals. What’s changed is the scale of ambition around it, and property market watchers believe Nobu’s arrival points to something wider: growing confidence in Portugal’s long-term potential among luxury developers.

Nobu already runs 50 restaurants and 19 hotels across the world, with European outposts in the UK, Spain, Italy, Monaco, Poland, Hungary and Turkey. Monte Rei isn’t the brand’s first move into Portugal either. Plans were announced back in 2023 for a Nobu hotel and restaurant on Lisbon’s Avenida da Liberdade, and this new project reaffirms that Portugal is becoming a fixture on Nobu’s map rather than a one-off.

Paul Stannard, Chairman and Founder of Portugal Pathways and the Portugal Investment Owners Club, commented: “Development of branded residences is particularly significant for property investors as they give residential schemes an instantly recognisable identity — buyers are not simply being offered a home but access to a lifestyle proposition built around hospitality, service and leisure.

“This model is increasingly prominent in international luxury property markets and expansion in Portugal by Nobu suggests the country is becoming part of that global ecosystem.”

Until now, the Western Algarve has held the spotlight in the region’s luxury property scene, with names like Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo long established as favourites among wealthy international buyers. Monte Rei tells a different story. Tucked into the quieter Eastern Algarve near the Spanish border and surrounded by countryside rather than coastline, it’s already a high-end destination in its own right, and Nobu’s arrival could push its international profile further still.

“It could be crucial to Portugal’s luxury property sector,” Stannard added. “As established locations become increasingly mature, less-developed areas with space, privacy and high-quality infrastructure can offer a new proposition for both developers and buyers.

“The wider significance of the Nobu announcement is how Portugal is now attracting luxury brands that have traditionally concentrated on Europe’s established premium destinations.

“For international property buyers, that strengthens the country’s proposition: climate, lifestyle and relatively easy access to the rest of Europe, plus good international air links.

“Shrewd investors will surely see the Nobu project as another indicator of Portugal’s luxury property market trajectory.”
