What is a ZIP Bomb?

A ZIP bomb is a highly compressed archive designed to explode in size when extracted.

Example:

• Download size → few KBs
• Extracted size → GBs, TBs, even PBs

Sounds fake? The famous [42.zip](https://unforgettable.dk/) is only around 42 KB, but expands insanely large.

The ZIP itself isn’t malware. No hacking. No virus code.

It just abuses compression.

First, How Compression Works

Suppose a file contains:

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA..........

Instead of storing every A, compression says: “Store: A repeated 20 times.”

Now imagine repeating this idea at a ridiculous scale.

That’s where things become dangerous.

How ZIP Bombs Are Made

1. Create highly repetitive data
2. Compress it aggressively
3. Sometimes place compressed archives inside compressed archives
4. Multiply extraction recursively

What Happens After Extraction?

On Servers

If servers auto-extract uploads: CPU spikes, RAM usage explodes, disk space dies, containers/services crash

Ek tiny file… aur pura server headache.
