The Wrong Time to Trust the Awesome Oscillator

Most traders use AO the same way. The line crosses zero, you enter. The setup looks fine, and still the results disappoint.

We ran AO(5,28) on eight years of gold daily data. EMA200 regime gate, nothing exotic. The result: PF 1.87 across 33 trades, win rate 51.5%. Decent, not spectacular.

Then we split every trade by one variable: was ATR above or below its 8-year median at entry?

The calm half: PF 4.63. Win rate 68.8%.

The volatile half: PF 1.02. Barely break-even.

Same indicator. Same parameters. Same entry signal. The only difference was what gold’s daily volatility looked like in the moment.

When ATR is elevated (post-news spikes, geopolitical shocks, Fed meetings), the AO zero-cross is noise. The market moves too fast for a momentum filter running 5 and 28-day periods to read the signal accurately. You get a cross, you enter, and then the noise shakes you out before the trend has time to develop.

When ATR is calm, that exact same cross pays. The trend has room. The signal has room. And the data shows it plainly: half the trades, same total return, less than half the drawdown.

The practical adjustment is simple. Before entering on an AO cross, compare current ATR to the last three or four weeks. If ATR is spiking, wait. The data says those entries don’t pay.

What this really shows is something broader. Most indicators aren’t permanently good or bad. They’re right in one regime and wrong in another. The skill is knowing which one you’re in.
