🚆 Traffic Tale: Patience on the Western Express

The rain had stopped, but the traffic hadn’t. I was stuck on the Western Express Highway, somewhere between Andheri and Goregaon, staring at the endless red trail of brake lights. A bus honked like it had personal revenge against every motorist. My rickshaw driver sighed, “Sir, aaj toh Bhagwan bhi late ho jaaye.” (Translation: Even God would be late today.)

I smiled. Mumbai traffic can turn anyone into a philosopher.

At first, frustration boiled inside me. I had already survived a marathon day at work, three meetings, one delayed sprint review, and a polite rejection email from a company I had secretly dreamed of joining. My chai from the office pantry had gone cold before I could finish it. And now these two hours crawling home while the rainwater glistened under flickering streetlights.

The rickshaw barely moved, and the radio played static before catching a song. Old Kishore Kumar “Khaike paan Banaraswala.” (Translation: The song “Khaike paan Banaraswala.”) The driver began humming, tapping the steering with a rhythm that didn’t match the traffic but somehow matched the moment. I envied his calm. I was checking my phone every few seconds, watching time pass like taillights slow, inevitable, and red.

Then something changed. The driver switched off the meter. Without asking, he leaned out of the rickshaw and bought two vada pavs (Translation: potato fritters stuffed in bread buns) from a roadside stall. He handed me one. “Garam hai, le lo.” (Translation: It’s hot, take one.)

For a second, I hesitated. But his generosity cut through my irritation. The smell of fried potatoes, mixed with the monsoon air, was the unofficial perfume of Mumbai evenings. I took the vada pav, bit into it, and immediately felt grounded. The crisp gram flour, the soft pav, and the spicy chutney - it was simple, cheap, and perfect.

We ate quietly while the city blared around us: horns, shouts, the rhythmic splash of rickshaw tyres through puddles. On the divider, a little boy walked barefoot, holding his father’s hand, laughing at his reflection in a muddy puddle. A woman selling flowers tapped on car windows, hopeful. Somewhere, a teenager danced inside a bus to his phone’s speaker.

In that chaos, I suddenly saw something I usually miss: the rhythm of Mumbai life that doesn’t stop even when everything else does. Everyone, in their own way, was trying to move forward.

Maybe life isn’t always about speeding ahead. Perhaps sometimes it’s about standing still and noticing who’s beside you. Maybe traffic is just the city’s way of saying, “Aram se jao.” (Translation: Go slow, take it easy.)

When the road finally cleared, the driver started the engine again and said, “Bas thoda sabr chahiye, sir.” (Translation: All you need is a little patience, sir.) I nodded — patience — the rarest luxury in Mumbai.

As we rolled forward under the dim yellow lights, I looked out the window at the drizzle starting again. I realised that even in a city that measures time in deadlines and train schedules, there’s beauty in waiting. Sometimes, the pause teaches you more than the pace ever could.

By the time I reached home, I wasn’t annoyed anymore. Just grateful for a stranger’s kindness, a shared vada pav, and a reminder that slowing down doesn’t always mean falling behind.
