Japanese Women Now Beating Men With Umbrellas For Doing Pick Up

Pickup culture was never about meeting women. From the very beginning, it was about men finding ways to get sex from women who would otherwise want nothing to do with them, and calling it a skill so they could sell it to other men. Over the years, that idea grew into an entire industry. There are books, courses, bootcamps, and coaches charging thousands of dollars to teach men psychological tricks for getting women into bed, and there are YouTube channels with millions of views where men film themselves approaching random women on the street for entertainment.

These so-called pickup artists treat every woman in public as a target, and the men who follow them have taken that lesson into every city in the world. In Japan, the situation has gotten so out of control that women have started fighting back themselves.

How pickup culture teaches men to harass women

On June 9, 2026, a video went viral showing a woman in Japan beating a streamer with her umbrella after he tried to pick her up on camera. Within hours, millions of people had seen it. But this was not the first time something like this had happened in Japan. Streamers and pickup artists have done this kind of thing again and again, and the women living there have had to deal with it for years.

They film women without consent, harass them for reactions, and cause disturbances in bars and on the streets, all of it for views. Japan even has its own name for street pickup, nanpa, where men stand on street corners and hit on woman after woman, using the exact same line on every woman who walks by.

Most of these men aren’t interested in any of the women, they’re just hitting on one after another hoping that eventually one of them will agree to sleep with them. It shows just how perverted their minds really are. They actually think a woman will have sex with some random man who stopped her on the street, because they assume women are just as sex-obsessed and degenerate as they are.

The problem is that it isn’t just creepy and annoying, many of these men will follow a woman and harass her no matter how clearly she says no. In April 2026, a man was arrested for following a woman nearly 40 meters while repeatedly shouting at her, later telling police he was only trying to pick her up. Around the same time, another man was arrested in Shibuya for stopping a woman on the street and trying to pressure her into appearing in an adult video.

The problem has grown so severe over the years that the official numbers are genuinely disturbing. A Japanese government survey of more than 36,000 people aged 16 to 29 found that 10.5% had experienced groping or indecent acts in public, and women accounted for 88% of those victims. The survey also found that 80.4% of victims did not report the incident to police or authorities. In Tokyo, police recorded 606 public groping cases during the first half of 2025, but authorities and researchers believe that many victims do not come forward, so the true number is likely much higher.

Women are no longer staying silent

And this isn’t only a problem with local men. Men travel from other countries specifically to pull this kind of thing on Japanese women, because they think they can do it without consequences. Back in 2014, a pickup coach named Julien Blanc went to Tokyo and was filmed grabbing Japanese women on the street and forcing their heads toward his crotch, all while telling other men that in Japan you can do whatever you want.

In 2023, an American streamer named Johnny Somali did much of the same, verbally abusing women on the street in Japan for content until he was finally arrested. These men come to Japan specifically because they think Japanese women are too polite to fight back, and for a long time they were right. But everyone has a breaking point. Japanese women are done being polite about it and now they are the ones putting these men in their place.

Women did not create this culture men did

None of this started in Japan and none of it will end there either. Pickup culture exists in every country, and it works the same way everywhere. Men buy books like *The Game*, watch hours of videos, and pay for coaching programs that teach them lines, routines, and psychological tactics designed to get women into bed. They learn things like [negging](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Negging#:~:text=Negging%20(%22to%20neg%22%2C,need%20for%20the%20manipulator's%20approval.), which means insulting a woman just enough to lower her confidence so she starts seeking your approval.

They learn to ignore it when a woman turns them down, because the training tells them that a no is just a step on the way to a yes. Then they take all of it outside and use it on every woman they can find, at malls, on trains, outside gyms, because for them it’s all just a numbers game.

But it’s only a game for the men. For the women, it’s something they have to live with their entire lives. Surveys in the United States have found that more than 81% of women have experienced sexual harassment in their lifetime, and around half of them say it started before they turned 17.

In Egypt, a United Nations report found that 99.3% of women had been sexually harassed. In France, one study of more than 600 women found that 100% of them had been harassed on the public transit system. And across Europe, a separate survey found that 72% of women had been sexually harassed by a stranger, with most of it happening out in public.

For all the money these men spend learning how to manipulate women, not one of them ever stops to think about what it’s like to be on the receiving end. Women live with this every day, and they have learned the hard way that reporting it changes nothing and that nobody is going to do anything about it.

The grifters keep selling the courses, the streamers keep using women for views, and the laws stay exactly as useless as they have always been. The women hitting these men with umbrellas are not the problem, they are the result of a world that gave them no other way to feel safe.
