Project Odyssey Uses Physical Challenges to Heal Veterans’ Spirits

Erol Stapleton is a partner in E&J Estate Holdings of Elmhurst, Illinois, which develops high-quality residential communities in Chicago’s suburbs. An Illinois resident, Erol Stapleton regularly supports the Wounded Warrior Project’s (WWP) Project Odyssey.

WWP was founded in 2003 and offers services to veterans who have experienced combat-related trauma, wounds, or illnesses since September 11, 2001. Named after Homer’s epic tale of a warrior’s long journey home, Project Odyssey provides rehabilitation through strenuous recreation around the country.

Participants engage in a 90-day program of events, such as kayaking, whitewater rafting, sled hockey, and rock climbing. Encouraged to draw on their inner strength in a natural environment, they receive support from other warriors, link up to support groups, and learn goal-setting skills.

All-male and all-female retreats are available, as well as couples retreats. Project Odyssey is open to veterans currently in treatment for combat stress who have never been on this retreat before. They must pass through screening and travel on their own to the retreat site.
