HOW TO WRITE LIKE ME

IN THE MOST recent, I have started a new method of writing my stories. This new way that I am doing things is just changing the frame of mind. Some people have asked me about how I am pushing out such volume.

So here is the basic routine:

Stop preparing notes the way you did before. The first thing I want you to do is forgo the notes. You are not doing yourself any favours. IF IT DOESN’T STICK IN YOUR MIND, THEN IT IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

It is three in the morning and an idea pops in your head:

• Get out of bed
• Go to your computer
• Write it now. Write it messy. Get it on the page.

Don’t worry about anything else. If you want to edit now, then do so. When working on it with a clear mind you will find things you didn’t notice before, and you will add to the story, I promise. DO IT IN THE MORNING.

The number one thing I want to convey is to stop building pressure on the subject. When we apply pressure, the work suffers. To those of you who say I need the pressure, How is that working out for you so far? See?

When I sit at my computer, I am ZEN. I am free of all other thoughts except for my story and my characters. If you can’t do this, quit!

I capitalize the first three words in every chapter. This sends a signal to my brain, and it lets me know we are beginning.

Put yourself in their lives. Imagine these things happening to you. Don’t forget to have your characters react to people and the world around them.

Environment is important, pretend we can’t see, describe it to us.

They always say: show, don’t tell. It is called: show and tell. Remember that from school? Show us, but also don’t be shy to tell us. This is important, especially if you are writing in the first person. Let us in the character’s head.

If you write a chapter, and you don’t feel anything about it, then you did us a disservice. Part of being human is the feelings, punch us in the feels.

I read a line of advice that said: kill our darlings. If you can’t kill them, my advice is to beat them up. Have you ever been in a fight? Have you lost? MAKE THEM LOSE!

Not everyone is John Cena. We can’t throw a guy across the street. Most people are going to lose the fight.

The best advice I can give you is to take things from your life and add it in there to make it feel real, no matter how absurd your story gets.

Not everyone has become immortal from being nuked, but almost everyone has enjoyed eating an apple. Make your character eat an apple. (How juicy is it? What does it taste like? What is that texture like?)

These little experiences we have shared that seem so unimportant are a gold mine for making your story feel real.

Imagine, you are filming your story. When filming: point the camera at the action.

You know those long-winded boring parts of a movie. Don’t do that. If you don’t find it interesting, don’t expect me to.

Stop fleshing out your short passages. Leave them short. They are clean and precisely what you meant to say. Adding garbage to your beautiful line just to make a page count is stupid. You can always add a new chapter.

After you get a couple of chapters under your belt, let the characters tell you the story. Don’t try so hard, let it flow. Sometimes this takes you to a place you were not planning and that’s good because if you didn’t see it coming, neither did your readers. Don’t be scared to surprise them.

There is no writing yourself into a corner, just weak imaginations.

Stop trying to get a page count or a word count every day. You come, and you create until you don’t see anything anymore. Stop, and wait until you see what happens next.

The time you lost will be made up for tenfold, because it will open up things you never saw coming.

Let your twisted little imagination tell you what happens next, stop planning it.

A break can be exhilarating for your mind.

Always write a little note at the bottom every day about something you want to deal with in the story. Sometimes, I use the note for a chapter and other times I go a different way and the note gets deleted.

You are not writing this for money, you are writing this for story. The reason why so many stories suck is that they are writing out of desperation and greed. The money you make doesn’t matter.

This life is so short. You are going to blink, and it will be done. Don’t waste the time you have.
