Too Much Stuff for my Space?
Too Much Stuff for my Space?
Clutter happens easily. The mail comes in — but do the junk mail and cardboard boxes go out? And that’s just one small aspect of life. Clothes, shoes, furniture, appliances…
A practical way to judge whether you have the "right" amount of stuff is to look at how well your possessions work for your life rather than numbering items.
Ask yourself these questions:
1. Can your home support its purpose?
Can you cook in the kitchen without moving piles of paper? Can everyone sit in the living room comfortably or do you have piles of laundry and totes of stuff to put away? Can beds, tables, and desks be used without clearing them first? I’m not talking about a couple of things that got set down, but rather having to spend an hour putting things away. Can children access the things they need without help moving stuff?
If rooms within your house can’t easily serve their purpose, you may have more than the space can comfortably hold.
2. Does everything have a home?
A good rule is:
If you don’t know where something belongs, you probably have either too much stuff or too little storage (which can be a trap, beware!).
When items have designated places, cleaning becomes much easier.
3. How much time does it take to maintain?
Consider:
Are you constantly picking up? Do you feel behind on housework no matter how hard you work at containing it? Do your current possessions create stress?
The amount of stuff you own should be manageable with your available time and energy. If you can’t even put it all back in order, how will you have time to do projects you are storing the stuff for?
4. Do you use it?
That brings us to point of having anything around — do you actually use it, not just intending to but do you?
Try sorting items into:
- Used weekly
- Used seasonally
- Used occasionally but important
- Never used
The last category deserves the most scrutiny. Why are you keeping something you never use? Or at the very least how can you store it to be able to access it and then use it?
5. Is your storage overflowing?
Closets, cabinets, shelves, and storage bins should not be packed so tightly that you can't easily access things. If every space is crammed full, that's often a sign the quantity exceeds the space available.
6. Does it support your current season of life?
Many people keep items for a life they no longer live. This may include:
- Former hobbies
- Old curriculum
- Children’s outgrown items — we try to use a too small and too big box for clothes to keep only the just right ones out.
- Aspirational projects…let it go let it go.
It's okay to keep meaningful things, but it's worth asking whether each category still fits your current priorities.
Many professional organizers use this test:
If someone gave you a 15-minute warning that guests were coming for an afternoon visit, could you make the main living areas reasonably presentable without panic? How about 30 minutes? An hour?
If you could tidy in 15 minutes, your belongings are probably within a manageable range. If not, you may benefit from reducing possessions or improving organization.
For a homeschooling family, it's also normal to keep more books, curriculum, art supplies, and educational materials than average. The goal isn't minimalism—it's having enough space that those resources are useful rather than overwhelming.
A useful mindset is:
Keep what supports your family, your values, and your daily life. Let go of what consistently creates more burden than benefit.
Small steps to take in 15 minute chunks:
Get rid of packaging, junk mail, expired items as soon as you see them.
Go through a drawer, a cabinet, or a box daily for a while until you’ve touched everything in a room.
Contain visible clutter when possible in appropriate containers; it helps take a load off your brain.
