Comcast Corp Q3 Earnings Report

Quarterly Earnings Overview

Comcast Corp (CMCSA) reported a solid third quarter with total revenue increasing by 6.5% to $32.1 billion, driven in part by strong media performance from the Paris Olympics. Despite this growth, EBITDA decreased by 2% to $9.7 billion, indicating some pressure on overall profitability. The company generated $3.4 billion in free cash flow and returned $3.2 billion to shareholders, including $2 billion in share repurchases, showcasing its commitment to capital allocation.

The Connectivity and Platforms division remained stable year-over-year with $20.3 billion in revenue. Within this division, Comcast saw 5% growth in Residential Connectivity revenue and a strong 19% increase in Domestic Wireless revenue. Business Services Connectivity grew by 5%, while International Connectivity revenue rose 8%. Media revenue saw a remarkable increase of 37% to $8.2 billion, bolstered by the Paris Olympics, which alone generated $1.9 billion in revenue. Peacock’s revenue grew an impressive 82%, demonstrating strong performance in streaming. However, Theme Parks revenue dipped by 5%, reflecting a 14% EBITDA decrease due to lower attendance at domestic locations, while Studios revenue rose by 12% with EBITDA up 9%.

Positive results included Comcast’s continued network expansion, reaching 1.2 million additional homes and businesses over the past year. The Paris Olympics highlighted NBCUniversal’s and Peacock’s strengths, adding $1.9 billion in incremental media revenue. Comcast also led the industry in domestic broadband and wireless growth, achieving a combined 5% increase in this sector.

Challenges included a net loss of 87,000 broadband subscribers, partially due to the expiration of the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP). Theme Parks suffered lower attendance, and video revenue fell by 7% due to customer losses and slowing domestic ARPU growth. In a response to the ongoing trend of cable subscriber losses, with 365,000 users disconnecting in Q3, Comcast hinted at a strategic divestment of its cable television network businesses. Comcast’s President, Mike Cavanagh, clarified that any separation would exclude NBC and Peacock, emphasising their importance as growth drivers within Comcast’s media strategy. This move underscores Comcast’s acknowledgment of the shifting media landscape and its focus on streaming to offset declines in traditional cable services.

CMCSA has returned -0.66% YTD while the S&P500 returned 20.10% so far this year.
