Nano Banana 2 Lite, technically Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite Image, hit the scene on June 30, 2026. It’s the newest, fastest tier in Google’s image lineup. Google says that even with the speed, it still follows prompts well, keeps characters consistent across images, and handles text inside images cleanly. Most AI tools still mess that part up.

It replaces the original Nano Banana, which is now basically a legacy version. But it doesn’t replace everything. Nano Banana 2 (the general workhorse) and Nano Banana Pro (the slow, high-quality version) are still around. Lite is just the new, cheap, fast entry point.

Where You Already Have Access to It

You don’t need a developer API for this. Google is pushing Nano Banana 2 Lite into the stuff people use every day: the Gemini app, AI Mode in Search, Google Photos, NotebookLM, Google Flow, Stitch, and Google Ads.

Honest Limitations

Every image has Google’s SynthID watermark. It’s invisible, but it’s there. Keep that in mind if you’re using images without mentioning they’re AI. Also, this is brand new. We’re still waiting for independent tests to see if it actually beats other fast models like Google claims. And “free” means within the app’s normal limits. If you’re doing commercial-scale work via the API, you’re paying per image, even if the cost is tiny.
