As a Content Agency Founder, Here Is Why Most Agencies Are Failing Their Clients
I run a content agency with my partner, Lainey Green. We have worked with dozens of CPG and consumer brands in the past year. And I am going to tell you something most agencies will never admit.
Most content agencies are failing their clients.
Not because they lack talent. Not because they do not work hard. But because they are optimizing for the wrong things. And by the time a brand figures it out, they have already spent months and thousands of dollars on content that looked great in a deck and did nothing in the real world.
Here is what actually goes wrong.
They Prioritize Polish Over Performance
The number one mistake content agencies make is confusing production quality with results. A beautifully shot brand video with perfect lighting and a color grade does not outperform a raw, authentic piece of UGC filmed on an iPhone. In 2026, consumers have developed an almost unconscious ability to detect when they are being sold to. The moment content looks too produced or too perfect, it gets scrolled past.
The agencies winning right now are not the ones with the best cameras. They are the ones who understand that real storytelling outperforms polished advertising every single time.
They Do Not Understand the Platforms
TikTok is not Instagram. Instagram is not YouTube Shorts. Each platform has its own culture, its own algorithm, and its own content formats that perform. An agency that is repurposing the same video across every platform without adapting it is not doing its job.
The brands that go viral are the ones creating content that feels native to the platform it lives on. Street interview content, trend driven UGC, skit based storytelling… these formats were built for short form social and they perform because they speak the language of the platform.
They Chase Trends Without a Strategy
Jumping on a trending audio or a viral format is not a content strategy. It is a tactic. And tactics without strategy produce spikes in vanity metrics that mean nothing for a brand’s long term growth.
The agencies that actually move the needle are the ones building a consistent content ecosystem rooted in the brand’s identity and audience. Trends are a tool, not a foundation.
They Do Not Act Like Partners
The best client relationships we have built at Glass Vault are the ones where we stopped acting like a vendor and started acting like a member of the team. We know our clients’ products, their audiences, their competitors, and their goals as well as they do. When something is not working we say so. When an opportunity comes up we flag it.
Most agencies show up, deliver the files, send the invoice, and disappear. That is not partnership. That is a transaction.
They Cannot Prove Their Results
Content that generates hundreds of millions of impressions organically is meaningless if a brand cannot connect it to real business outcomes. The agencies worth working with are the ones who can point to follower growth, engagement rates, viral moments, and ultimately sales driven by their content.
At Glass Vault we have helped brands hit number one on Amazon in their category. We have taken Instagram accounts from 95,000 to 250,000 followers in under a year. We have produced videos that generated 30 million views for a single piece of content. Those are not vanity metrics. Those are business results.
What to Look For Instead
If you are evaluating a content agency, ask them these questions. What organic results have you driven for brands similar to mine? Can you show me content that performed, not just content that looked good? How do you stay current on platform trends and algorithm changes? What does your process look like when a concept is not working?
The answers will tell you everything.
The content agency model is broken when agencies prioritize aesthetics over authenticity, transactions over partnerships, and vanity metrics over real results. The ones that are building something different are the ones worth working with.
At Glass Vault, authentic content that performs is all we do. If you are a CPG or consumer brand looking for a content partner that treats your brand like their own, visit glass-vault.com.
