What is a Word of the Year (WOTY) and Why it Matters
With about an 80% failure rate, the New Year’s Resolution needs to be reevaluated. This article will help you understand the Word Of The Year (WOTY) alternative to a New Year’s Resolution.
Since 2022, I have practiced the The WOTY is connecting you with your inner tortoise, calm and consistently progressing. It minimizes the ADHD of the rabbit — always on the go, agitated, unsure why, zigging and zagging after the fads.(WOTY) habit. I feel it is a serious contender to the New Year’s Resolution, and you should consider adding it to your toolbox.
What is the WOTY?
It is a single word you choose to guide you every day of the year.
The best Word of the Year (WOTY) is a single, carefully chosen word that becomes your filter, focus, and compass for who you are becoming over the next twelve months. Instead of chasing resolutions, one word quietly shapes your decisions, habits, and attention toward your future self.
“Think of your word as a North Star — constant, guiding, and illuminating your path.”- The Positive Mom
The WOTY is an intention; a direction for all areas of your journey to “You 2.0” — more about “Who am I becoming?” than “What will I achieve?”. The improved you supports all of the goals you have in place.
Why would I choose a WOTY?
“A word of the year simplifies complexity and focuses your energy.” — Bryn Donovan
Choosing one guiding word simplifies your growth: it becomes a north star you can remember in the middle of real life, not just in January. Unlike a goal, a word of the year is more abstract and open to interpretation.
Your WOTY can adapt to unexpected life challenges with greater flexibility and simplicity than resolutions can. This flexibility is one of its greatest strengths.
Benefits of your Word of the Year
- A WOTY opens your eyes to new opportunities. Because you are looking, you will see new opportunities.
- A WOTY helps you make aligned decisions. It is a simple habit to check in with your WOTY, which is rich in personal meaning, like a special seasoning for your life.
- Your WOTY is a self-imposed limit that allows you to dig deeper into one mindset instead of multitasking your personal development.
- A WOTY is a constant but gentle reminder for positive change. Your word of the year is a daily permission slip to live more courageously.
- A WOTY helps you remain more conscious and mindful of your experiences. When your word trains your attention, your emotional life begins to change.
Your WOTY is a theme or guiding principle about direction rather than success or failure. It is more than a word, but a habit, a system, to adjust your life course a wee bit each day.
How To Choose Your WOTY?
Outstanding WOTYs are clear, emotionally meaningful, and flexible enough to speak into many areas of life. Some examples are “Courage,” “Rooted,” “Delight,” “Presence,” or “Steward.”

Q&A
Q. What if I don’t like my word in a couple of months or think of a better one?
A. Change words.
Q. What if I like a short phrase better?
A. Use it. WOTY is flexible.
Q. Do I have to start in January?
A. No. Start anytime. I usually choose my word in December and start using it right away. You can start in May or September. We usually start in January and go for a year because the WOTY has become a viable alternative to the New Year’s Resolution. You could change words every 6 months if you want to.
How To Use Your WOTY
Your WOTY journey is a marathon, not a sprint. It puts a light on behavior with a consistent, light touch: a light breeze nudging you toward the person you want to be. The WOTY is connecting you with your inner tortoise, calm and consistently progressing. It minimizes the ADHD of the rabbit — always on the go, agitated, unsure why, zigging and zagging after the fads.
Make friends with your chosen WOTY.
- Weave the word into your environment and routines so it shapes your future self almost on autopilot. You might:
- → Put it in your planner, your phone lock screen, your car, shoe, on your mirror, desk, or your phone notes/reminders
- → Use it as a journaling prompt (maybe “Where did I live my word? Where did I ignore it?”)
- → Pair it with a short breath prayer or mantra each morning
- → Pair your word with a short phrase or prayer you repeat during hard moments
Find quotes around your word or topic to re-read for inspiration.
Create visual reminders — wallpaper, Post-it notes, or a simple symbol that represents your word.
Season your decisions with the wisdom of your WOTY.
- Use your word as a daily decision filter. Ask, “Does this choice align with my word?” before saying yes, committing, or reacting. For example, if your word is “Steady,” you might decline an exciting but draining opportunity that would disrupt your health or family rhythm.
- Incorporating your guiding word into questions when making decisions or considering old habits. For example, if your word was ‘thrive’, you might ask yourself ‘is spending three hours on social media each day helping me thrive?’
Check in with your friend periodically. Set a reminder on your phone for a couple of months’ time to check in with your word of the year. Does it still resonate with you?
“A word of the year is a commitment to growth, not a contract of perfection.” — The Bright Balloon Blog
Share your word with a trusted friend or “accountability partner” and check in monthly.
Celebrate small choices that align with your word to train your brain to notice progress.
Revisit and refine how you define the word as the year unfolds so it stays alive, not rigid.
