Plot

The film is set in late 2024, right at the tail end of the “Brat Summer” phenomenon. We follow a fictionalized version of Charli XCX as she navigates the exhausting machinery of her first arena tour. While her creative director, Celeste (Hailey Benton Gates), wants to keep the raw, nightclub energy of the album alive, the record label has other plans.

They brought in Johannes Godwin (Alexander Skarsgård), a pretentious, “auteur” filmmaker tasked with turning the tour into a polished Amazon Music concert film. As Charli is pulled between brand deals — including a disastrous “Brat” credit card — and Johannes’s overblown artistic ego, she begins to lose her grip on what the “Brat” era was even supposed to represent. The story follows her journey through London, New York, and Ibiza as she tries to decide whether to keep the momentum going or burn the whole thing down.

The Vibe: This isn’t your typical pop-star documentary like Miss Americana or Five Foot Two. Director Aidan Zamiri uses a “mockumentary” style that feels more like a psychological thriller. The cinematography by Sean Price Williams gives it a grainy, 35mm look that makes the strobe lights and chaotic backstage meetings feel claustrophobic and real.

The Performances: * Charli XCX: She is surprisingly good at playing a heightened, more selfish version of herself. She doesn’t mind looking “cringe” or messy, which adds a layer of authenticity to the satire. I believe Conan O’Brien said that this is ‘the most HONEST depiction of fame.’

• Alexander Skarsgård: He almost steals the movie as Johannes. He is perfectly punchable as the high-brow director who thinks he’s “elevating” Charli’s work while actually stripping it of its soul.
• The Cameos: Rachel Sennott and Kylie Jenner show up playing “themselves,” and it’s a clever look at how celebrity circles operate as a support system that sometimes just creates more noise. Sennott is excelent. More than Charli, she played a very non-flattering version of herself.

Technical Hits: The score by A.G. Cook is jagged and pulsating — it perfectly mirrors Charli’s rising anxiety. The film does a great job of showing the “grind” of being a multi-platform entrepreneur; the Zoom calls in limos and the constant need for “content” will feel very familiar to anyone working in the digital space today.

The Misses: The middle act in Ibiza slows down the pacing significantly. While it’s meant to show Charli’s isolation, it feels a bit indulgent compared to the sharp, witty energy of the London and New York segments.

Conclusion

The deeper meaning of The Moment is about the “assassination” of an era. It explores the terrifying reality of what happens when a subculture (like Brat) becomes a global brand.

The movie argues that once you “get what you want” — the fame, the number one album, the arena tour — the industry immediately tries to take it away from you to package it for the masses. And they (the record labels) don’t even know it.

The “Moment” isn’t about a specific performance; it’s about that fleeting point in time where an artist still owns their idea before it belongs to the shareholders. It’s a bittersweet “kiss-off” to a specific chapter of pop culture. Sometimes, for something new to grow, the previous version of yourself has to die.

Final Verdict: A sharp, stylish, and often uncomfortable satire of the music industry. If you were part of Brat Summer, this is the funeral service you didn’t know you needed.
