The old woman in the hospital bed was dreaming of the past.

The days she used to play hide-and-seek behind the Compactor.

She’d slipped into the dim processing room. A man was there — gagged, bound. Another man threw him onto the hood of a car. The gagged man’s eyes met hers. A moment later, the car collapsed into a cube. Twenty centimeters across.

The man looked at her.

“You saw that?” The little girl nodded. He crouched down, level with her eyes. “I’ll ask you again. Did you see it?” The little girl shook her head. “Good girl.”

The old woman opened her eyes.

Her children and grandchildren were gathered around the bed. She looked at them and said:

“Didn’t see a thing.”
