A perfect dialogue for defining my philosophical nature comes from one of the best TV series HBO has ever made: True Detective. A line by the character Rustin Cohle: "If the only thing that keeps a person decent is the expectation of divine reward, then brother, that person is a piece of shit." That line touched something in me — and honestly, so did nearly every line he spoke throughout the series. I hope people like me will enjoy watching this show as much as I did.

Now let me get to my actual point. I know this will feel uncomfortable — maybe even offensive — to overly religious people. And I’ll admit, I feel strangely at ease saying that. I’m not attacking faith. I’m talking about something narrower: a person’s own moral values, and what they’re actually worth if there’s no heaven or hell waiting on the other side. If a person’s decency only exists because of divine consequence — reward or punishment — then they haven’t actually learned what humanity means. They’ve learned what a transaction means. I know the counterargument already: that humanity itself was described and shaped by divine power. I agree with that completely. But here’s where my point diverges — where is the intention in all of it? Because intention is what we’re supposedly judged on. If a believer’s virtue only exists for the fruits of the afterlife, then what exactly have they learned about being human? In my view, that’s not virtue — that’s just greed wearing a haly. And that is not what divine guidance was ever meant to produce. A person needs to be moral without a greedy intention behind it. That, to me, is what real humanity looks like — not obedience bought with the promise of paradise. Imam Ali said it better than I ever could: "I don’t worship You out of fear of Your fire, nor out of longing for Your paradise, so that I should be a servant motivated by fear or greed. Rather, I found You worthy of worship, so I worshipped You." True worship isn’t a trade. It isn’t done to purchase a reward or to escape a punishment. It is done purely out of love and reverence for the majesty, grace, and perfection of the Divine — nothing added, nothing expected in return.
