Today’s terminology explains much of the past
Have you ever had a bad feeling about a building or a location that you couldn’t quite explain? When I was a child, I lived for the first nine years in what we later called the old house.
There was no indoor plumbing, and it leaked when it rained, but the home was filled with love. Even after we moved, my brothers and I would still play inside until the house was torn down, and we never felt uncomfortable.
Up the hill, about 50 feet behind the backyard, was a shed that Cousin Guy used to store his tractor and garden tools. He lived about 70 feet to the West in his family home.
Whenever I walked up the hill to visit Guy, his sisters and their elderly parents, or played in the vacant area between our backyard and the shed, I always felt uneasy.
I didn’t have words to describe the feeling back then, but in today’s culture it would be considered negative energy. I was always happy playing in my own front and backyard and with cousins who lived nearby.
I enjoyed walking through the garden where my grandma planted vegetables and just beyond where I was told our church had been in the 1800s.
Still, as soon as I walked near the shed there was a feeling that I should not go too close. It was not a feeling of a haunting but just a sense that I was not welcome any closer.
What was up with that shed?
I don’t recall any neighborhood children ever playing close to that structure or attempting to open the door and go inside. My younger brother said he and his friends never thought to look inside. I used to wonder what may have happened in the shed or nearby.
In 1968, when I was 10, we moved to a house about 100 feet to the West and down the hill in front of Cousin Guy’s home. That same year, his family tore down their old house and built a new one with an actual garage.
The old shed remained, and I often stopped when walking to their house and shuddered at the negative energy radiating from that building. I never saw anything, but it felt as if something were lurking that was not allowed to manifest.
Something similar happened when my husband and I spent the night at a lodging connected to UVA Hospital. We were uncomfortable, and it felt as if the night had a thousand prying eyes focused on us. We did not see anything but felt we were being watched. We prayed and were protected and were thankful to leave the following day.
Guy and his family were Christians, people of prayer who attended church, and their home had Bibles and Bible story books, yet all four siblings and their parents had an odd coldness about them.
I did not experience the warmth that others in the family displayed. I can't put it into words but they all seemed to lack something personality-wise. You always felt you had to mind your manners around them.
I never saw any evidence of the occult, but their old home and the new house also held a slightly unwelcoming feeling. Many people said they felt uncomfortable in both houses, but nothing serious happened.
I was thankful when they finally tore down that shed, but the area still felt as though you should not go near it. Several of my cousins said the shed also gave them the creeps.
Could the property have been haunted?
After Guy died, in the late 1990s, his remaining sister, Georgia, eventually needed round-the-clock care so she could remain in the family home. One of her caregivers was an older woman named Mrs. Dent.
One day, my grandma called to check on Georgia, and she said Mrs. Dent told her an interesting story. She said that in one of the bedrooms, she had seen a light-skinned man in the rocking chair. He was wearing glasses and smoking a pipe.
My grandma replied that Mrs. Dent had described Guy, whom she had never seen. When he was living, he often rocked in his chair while smoking a pipe.
No one ever reported seeing apparitions of the parents or the sister who died, but after Georgia passed away, a family that rented the home said doors were shutting on their own.
I don’t know why the shed gave off those negative vibes or why Mrs. Dent saw a spirit imitating Guy and what he did when he was living. There is no one left now who can shed light on the subject.
The last living older family cousin told me a few years ago that the house and the land gave her the creeps, but she did not know why. I guess now there is no way to figure it out.
