First Day at TCS: Expectations vs. Reality

I’m Rinku, your new writer friend.

I joined TCS in August 2022, just three months after completing my college degree. Coming from Odisha and being posted in Kolkata, it was a completely new place for me — with new people, a different culture, and an unknown environment.

During my college days, I was always a bit shy and nervous. So when I joined TCS, I was honestly afraid of the professionalism, the expectations, and the unknown challenges I might face. I didn’t know what was waiting for me.

In my imagination, I thought seniors would be strict, highly disciplined, and formal. I expected a structured orientation, supportive introductions, and time to settle in.

A glimpse of the corporate maze I walked into on Day 1 at TCS

But the reality was quite different.

From the very first day, it felt like I was dropped into a world that expected me to know everything already. I was scolded for things I didn’t even understand yet, like following up with employees I hadn’t met and arranging access that no one had guided me on.

The first day was overwhelming. I felt confused, anxious, and honestly — pretty lost. Nine hours felt like an eternity.

Even basic things like finding where to eat lunch were challenging. I didn’t know about the canteen or nearby food options. When I nervously asked a senior, they brushed me off rudely and told me to “ask the juniors.”

Thankfully, two kind-hearted juniors — just a year older than me — stepped in and helped me out. They showed me the canteen and made me feel a little more welcome in that moment. It felt like finding stars in a dark sky.

🌟 What I Learned:

That day taught me two important lessons:

1. Not everyone will be kind, and that’s okay.
2. Even in the toughest moments, you’ll find people who genuinely help you.

I’m stronger, more prepared, and much more confident now than I was on that first day. And I’m just getting started.
