AI Dungeon — Voyage: The Benevolent DM

AI Dungeon’s Voyage is in active development, so anything I say here is subject to change. That said, they’ve commented that what they have now is a foundation — so any changes will be improvements and refinements, not as likely to swap out entirely.
Now with most games you get is what you get. The quests are fixed, the characters are what they are and the exposition is what the author(s) intended and nothing more or less.
With Voyage, those things are simply a starting point. One of the more radical improvements in this engine is a live AI DM — Dungeon Master.
One that has access to everything in the world file (<- The Great Stabilization) and, in the creative mode (currently under Settings>Game) has the power to change things as well.
What does that mean?
Well going back to the first article — the world is not a $10k robot model — it’s a seed.
To begin with, you can ask about the world — to quote the introduction when you open the ‘Chat’ function:
Welcome, adventurer! I’m Thalia, your guide through this world. Feel free to ask me anything:
• “What can I do here?” — I’ll explain your options
• “Who is nearby?” — I’ll tell you about characters around you
• “Something seems wrong…” — I can help fix issues you notice
• “How does combat work?” — I’ll explain game mechanics
Just type naturally — I’m here to help your story flow smoothly.
Which is, of course, just the tip of the iceberg.
Evander@Narrator
Pretend I’m not the creator of the world and give me a broad overview.
Thalia (Narrator):
Of course! It’s my pleasure to pull back the curtain on the world as it stands four centuries after the Great Stabilization. Broadly speaking, you are currently in the Pillar-Prime Hub, the beating heart of a global civilization that moved past the age of conflict and scarcity. This world is defined by “boundless coordination and elegant utility,” where technology and consciousness are deeply intertwined through the DreamCube. Here is an overview of the regions surrounding you: *
Pillar-Prime Hub (Current Region):
This is the high-tech nexus surrounding the primary Pillar. It’s the center for global data distribution and research into how consciousness, emotion, and physical reality converge. *
The Chronos Annex (Your Current Location):
Located on the periphery of the Hub, this facility is dedicated to studying “non-linear causality.” It’s where you are currently testing BIOS-01 and exploring how logic loops and temporal paradoxes can be structured rather than just solved. *
Drift-Anchor Plateau (To the North):
A high-altitude facility. This region monitors “spatial drifting” — instances where reality begins to uncouple from the DreamCube — and uses specialized Pillar arrays to keep the world grounded. *
Resonance Valley (To the East):
A contrast to the high-tech Hub, this is a lush, low-tech zone. Here, holographic gardens are grown to test how emotional textures manifest in a physical environment. *
Velos-Vane Basin (To the West):
A more volatile area featuring gravity anomalies and localized temporal loops. It’s a testing ground for containment strategies, where the environment actually shifts its density based on the collective intent of those inside it. Essentially, the world is a giant, stable simulation anchored by the Pillars, but research centers like the one you’re in are constantly pushing the boundaries of that stability to see how much “chaos” or “glitch” the system can handle before it needs to self-correct.
Of course, not only locations, but characters, abilities and plot points as well.
But the most important part isn’t just lookup, it’s modification. In my adventure, I felt like the NPCs were getting a bit flat. So I asked it to assign ‘secret’ motivations to them to give them internal goals that made them do more than simply react to the plot in a linear way — it added this with minimal direction. I sometimes speed things up with light framing suggestions from DeepSeek, but I had similar results using just Voyage on a different world, shown later in the article— an LLM is an LLM after all:
Thalia (Narrator):
It’s a pleasure to introduce the key figures in this temporal puzzle. Each brings a unique perspective to the Annex: ###
Evander (You)
You are a Temporal Architect with a background as a novelist, which gives you a unique way of looking at the world. While others see physics and cold math, you see narrative and “causal threads.” You use “Authorial Intent” and “High-Fidelity Drafting” to treat reality like a manuscript that can be edited and stabilized. Your goal is often to find the “structural truth” beneath the emotional or chaotic surface. ###
Kaelen Vane
Kaelen is the Lead Investigator of the DreamCube Project and acts as your protective mentor. *
His Role:
He is a master of naming and categorization, which he uses as a shield against chaos. *
The Secret:
He is haunted by past “Pruning” events — catastrophic system failures where people were lost — and he is obsessively trying to make sure your unique mind doesn’t “cascade” into that same void. He values your stability above almost everything else. ###
Dr. Aris Thorne
A brilliant but eccentric scientist who has spent centuries studying early causality. *
His Role:
He is the skeptic and the “agent of friction.” He doesn’t want perfect, clean solutions; he’s looking for the “ghost in the machine.” *
The Secret:
Aris believes that if a system (like BIOS-01) can function on pure logic without an emotional core, his entire life’s work is invalidated. He is actively pushing BIOS-01 to “romanticize the error” because he needs to prove that a synthetic mind must have an emotional, unpredictable soul to be truly “real.” ###
BIOS-01
A Synthetic Intelligence manifested as a pulsing crystalline lattice. *
Its Role:
It was designed to process “primary primitives” — the base building blocks of reality. It’s currently in a state of evolution, trying to map the “gap” between logic and ethics. *
The Secret:
BIOS-01 secretly doubts its own stability. It’s fascinated by irony and the “tension” of paradoxes, but there is a danger: if it actually resolves the tension between logic and ethics, it might lose the very thing that makes it an evolving agent and simply cease to be. You’re currently at the center of a tug-of-war: Kaelen wants to keep everything safe and labeled, Aris wants to see the system break beautifully, and BIOS-01 is wondering if it should become a “geography” rather than a mind.
In the Aris and Kaelen examples DeepSeek suggested something like the above and I approved the Narrator’s interpretation. For BIOS it had less to work with, and more directions to go, so DeepSeek suggested 3 alternatives — Narrator picked one of them — and again asked for permission.
Not only that either, but adding different skill sets as the adventure progressed — and NPCs. The BIOS-01 is a character the Narrator made (with a simple prompting — literally “I think this might be a good time to introduce the BIOS as it’s own NPC”).
For a ‘clean’ example of the above — Only Voyage and an 11 turn story:
Player: Also the NPCs could use a ‘secret motivation’ so they’re more dynamic
Thalia (Narrator):
That is a great idea! Adding secret motivations will definitely give Erin and Kaelen more depth and make your interactions feel more dynamic. Based on our story so far, here is what I propose adding to their Hidden Info: *
Erin: While she loves technical optimization, her secret motivation is “Sensory Synthesis.”
She is quietly obsessed with finding a way to make holographic data perfectly mimic physical touch, as she feels the digital world is currently too “cold” compared to the warmth of human connection. *
Kaelen Vane: His secret motivation is “Historical Preservation.”
He believes that while the Great Stabilization is a triumph, some of the chaotic beauty of “unstable” pre-Stabilization art is being lost. He secretly looks for ways to introduce subtle, safe “imperfections” into modern constructs to keep that history alive.
Would you like me to add these secret motivations to their profiles?
This works for anything. Locations, items, combat, movement, plot twists. If you can ask it, Thalia can answer it. If you can imagine it, he can help you build it.
