How light shapes our mood?

I remember feeling really sad,

Almost depressed in winters; especially in Bangalore, where sometimes there’s no sun visible for days. Brightness, Colors, space around you is a really huge factor on how your day will go on.

On a biological level, light significantly controls our circadian rhythm, A human body’s 24hr internal clock. It is responsible involuntarily to a human feeling calm, motivated, or low.

In winters, the sunlight is scarce. Hence, our body produces more melatonin (the sleep hormone) and less serotonin (the feel-good chemical). This results in lower energy levels, heaviness, and a sadness that often feels emotional but actually starts right in the body.

Vice-versa, this Phenomenon is true for summers as well. Summers are meant to be known for bright and happy days because of it being a warm season and your body is comparatively active.

Psychologically, Light and brighter spaces create a sense of clarity and safety in humans. We tend to be in spaces that are breathable and visually accessible rather than darker and compact spaces that evokes a sense of unknown and terror.

You must have seen in movies. Happy frames are shot on a bright and warmer light whereas the sad and despairing sequence are shot under blue and dull lights. All these are ways to depict the mood of that scene, which is quite literal in reality as well.
