Milestone assembly for Tata Africa

Tata Africa has rolled out its 12 000th locally assembled commercial vehicle at its Rosslyn facility, marking a production landmark for the Indian-owned manufacturer in Gauteng.

The milestone vehicle, a Tata Ultra T.14, was handed over to RAM Couriers during a gathering that included India’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Prabhat Kumar, along with company leadership and dealer partners.

The Rosslyn plant first opened its doors in 2011, initially producing models such as the Tata LPT 813 and LPT 1518 . The facility now assembles the Ultra, Prima and LPT ranges, as well as Tata Daewoo models and has an annual capacity of around 2 200 vehicles.

Asif Shamim, head of international business at Tata Motors, said the number reflects the company’s focus on local production.

“Milestones are built on trust, customer confidence and strong partnerships. The rollout of the 12 000th vehicle reflects our long-standing commitment to South Africa — bringing our products closer to customers while creating jobs, building skills and strengthening the local automotive ecosystem.

The Indian manufacturer is one of several truck assemblers operating in the country. Rosslyn is also home to UD Trucks, part of the Volvo group, which assembles the Croner heavy commercial vehicle at a nearby facility . Other operators include Scania, MAN Truck and Bus South Africa, TFM Industries and Chinese manufacturer FAW, which runs an assembly plant in Isando .

Jacques Taylor, managing director of Tata Africa Holdings (Distribution), said the 12 000-unit mark points to steady progress.

“It reflects the progress we have made together with employees, partners and customers over many years,” he said.

Built to modern manufacturing standards, the Rosslyn plant integrates structured quality processes, rigorous inspection systems and contemporary assembly practices to ensure consistent product excellence. The facility reflects Tata Motors’ global focus on quality, durability and operational efficiency, while remaining responsive to the specific needs of the local market.

Tata’s Rosslyn plant spans roughly 35 000 square metres and employs 66 people. The facility produces vehicles mainly for the South African market, as well as Botswana, Namibia and Eswatini, while also exporting to Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi .
