Week Twenty-Two: 6/17/22

This is an EXTREMELY old mock. Eventually, we want to recreate plays in 3D using limb tracking data so that fans can zoom and pan and change perspective. Maybe they can insert themselves into the play! — but we’re still a few MVP + N sprints away from this capability — AND — the leagues don’t yet syndicate this data (to my knowledge).

Ciao INSIDERS,

Judging by auto replies, many of you are on vacation. We hope you are recharging after a couple of seasons mired in pandemic.

Well, the Dubs did it. Four titles in eight years. Safe to say, Curry’s HoF level superstar. As predicted in my Take last week, the game 4 winner did, indeed, win the series. In Hockey, we have a collision of weather-related dangers: Lightning vs. Avalanche. Colorado took game 1 after a lengthy rest, but don’t sleep on the 2x champs. They’ve been down before. Last is a bit of tech/sports news. Apple announced full streaming rights for the MLS beginning in 2023. My hot take? This is a big deal: no blackouts, every game, and the entire AAPL tech stack supporting. Apple has ten years to innovate with this content. Done right, you could see Major League Soccer gain material ground on the big 4 North American sports and gain standing with Int’l leagues.

REDACTED shared results from our 4th round of user testing this week. We’ll share more details next week, but the bottom line is:

  • The 18–28 demo continues to assert a need in the market for this product and profess an inclination to use our product to do so.
  • The OOBE process is straightforward — no major changes needed to the design.
  • The 3 columns of the UX: Chat, Activity Feed, and the User Profile were straightforward to users. Only small tweaks needed — and those to proactively build a more delightful user experience.

This reaffirms our choices in design and feature set, at least enough to code it up for real. I’d wager that few pre-seed ventures invest in user research the way we have. This investment reduces the risk of spending our limited capital building the wrong things in the wrong way. Actual interaction will reveal user behavior and needs that we will use to further iterate the product. For where we are in the process, good signs all around. The next one will be REALLY important as it focuses on creating Takes. Excelsior!

This week’s sprint, the Motown Miracle was chosen by REDACTED, our virtuoso coder and Mighigander who vividly remembers watching this hail mary touchdown, live, as the seconds hit zero on the clock — crazy play! In it, the team made good progress on wiring up the front end activity feed with the backend (for some “test” take videos — real video data, but not created through the app) and pulling in real game event data from sportradar into the feed.

Users can now do the following in the app:

  1. Create an account/log in
  2. Set a username
  3. Pick a favorite team & other teams to follow
  4. View activity feed populated with Takes (video & image) from teams you follow and game events from real games.

Next Week: we’ll move on to Creating Takes (at scale). This will be a 2 week release, where at the end, you will be able to create a take (record yourself or an image), share to your feed.
