Why Are People So Insecure?

We all want to grow old. Aging is a privilege, not something to be ashamed of. Not everyone is privileged to add another year to their life, so you should never feel bad about getting older. Every birthday is a blessing that many people never got the chance to experience.
Yet society treats youth like the highest form of value, especially for women. That’s why people become so obsessed with age and appearance. It’s also why so many people feel oddly triggered when they see someone aging confidently, looking good, and enjoying life.
I’m 30, and I won’t lie hearing “you don’t look your age” feels sweet. Not because aging is bad, but because it usually means you look healthy, vibrant, happy, and well taken care of. Imagine how amazing it will feel to reach 40 still glowing, still confident, still enjoying yourself.
There is nothing wrong with wanting to take care of yourself, look good, dress well, protect your peace, and enjoy compliments. The problem is that confident people often make insecure people uncomfortable.
That’s why so much age-shaming exists online. Some people see someone loving themselves and instead of feeling inspired, they feel irritated. They start criticizing appearances, confidence, boundaries, or lifestyle choices because deep down they are struggling with themselves.
And honestly, insecurity is behind a lot of the negativity we see online.
People project their fears onto others all the time. Someone confident becomes “too full of themselves.” Someone private is called “stuck up.” Someone aging beautifully is accused of “trying too hard.” Meanwhile, many of the people criticizing others are spending more time complaining than improving their own lives.
Negativity ages people too. Stress, bitterness, jealousy, and constant comparison eventually show not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually. You can almost feel when someone is carrying resentment.
Social media has made insecurity even louder because people constantly compare their everyday reality to someone else’s highlights. Instead of focusing inward and building confidence, many people obsess over strangers online. They become angry at people who are simply enjoying their lives.
I’ve also realized that boundaries trigger insecure people. When someone protects their peace, limits access, or refuses disrespect, people who feel entitled to others suddenly become offended. But not everyone deserves unlimited access to you.
At the root of insecurity is usually fear:
- Fear of aging
- Fear of not being enough
- Fear of being overlooked
- Fear of losing relevance
- Fear of seeing someone else become comfortable in ways they are not
But the solution is not to tear others down.
The solution is to pour that energy back into yourself. Heal. Grow. Rest. Take care of your body and your mind. Build a life you genuinely enjoy instead of spending your days criticizing people online.
Because people who truly love themselves are usually too busy living to constantly hate on others.
