Are AI Data Centers in Space The Real Solution?

Whether we like it or not, AI is draining Earth’s power grid and leaving the rest of the world in the the dust. In the US, it takes five to seven years to construct one data center. But AI demand doubles faster. Cowboy Space Corp. raised $275 million to do it in orbit instead.

📈 The Stats 📈

On May 11, 2026 Cowboy Space Corp. , founded by ex-Robinhood founder Baiju Bhatt, raised $275 million in Series B funding at a $2 billion valuation led by the likes of Index Ventures. New investors IVP, Blossom Capital, and SAIC joined alongside existing backers Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Construct Capital, and Andreessen Horowitz.

Bhatt told Spacenews the company has now raised over $365 million total. A big milestone and huge achievement for just a two year old company.

👨‍💻 What They Are Actually Building 👨‍💻

The original plan was to build an array of satellites around the planet equipped with solar panels to generate electricity and to beam it back down to Earth using infrared lasers. A truly wild idea but a sustainable one.

The data center boom led Bhatt to change his thinking.

He decided to pivot from beaming the electricity back, to now using it to power his orbital centers. But he ran into a problem, paying existing companies like SpaceX for rockets was not cheap every time he wanted to put another station into space and made it hard to scale. Instead, he chose to develop his own rockets inhouse.

His solution serves as a 2 in 1 package. The upper section of his rocket would serve as the data center itself, acting as the one-megawatt processing hub once in orbit.

Launch the rocket, rocket becomes the data center.

Bhatt’s team includes former employees from NASA, Kuiper, Astranis, and NVIDIA. A highly technical group of individuals with decades of knowhow between them.

🤔 Why It Matters 🤔

A solar panel in space generates significantly more electricity than one on the ground because its efficiency is not affected by the light absorbed by the atmosphere. And orbital solar panels can be deployed perpendicular to the sun at all times, whereas ground-based solar farms only achieve that angle for a limited window each day.

That’s not a marginal advantage. That’s a structural one.

Every corporation on the planet; Amazon, Google, Microsoft, is scrambling to find power for AI. They’re signing nuclear deals, buying old coal plants, lobbying for grid priority. They’re doing all of this because the problem is real and urgent and getting worse. Cowboy Space is proposing something none of them have tried: skip the grid entirely.

Think about what that unlocks. AI compute with no permitting fights, no utility negotiations, no five-year wait times. Data centers that can be deployed on a launch schedule instead of a construction schedule. Power beamed down to wherever it’s needed most like remote military operations, disaster zones, and underserved markets.

As the company put it: “Earth’s energy grid can’t run at the pace of AI. We can.”
