The last walking tree
My name is Brk and I am the last walking tree. Oh, yeah! We used to walk. Traveling to new places was my job. Finding new places for plants to flourish was my passion. But it was about fifty years ago, when we realised that the only reason that we walked and had such good skin on our wood was because we had been invaded. Not on earth. No.
Not even in the four dimensions of space-time. No.
We had been invaded in the higher dimensions, Dimensions that we can’t even perceive. The space that we made up in the higher dimension was invaded by some extraterrestrial beings. But it did help us too. We could move. Go to new places. We could wonder. We could dream. We could create new things. We could interact more with our environment. We had skin that helped us store nutrients inside us. I remember when we had pride in our work. Now there isn’t much of work and not much of pride.
Because as the news spread of these extraterrestrials, everybody started feeling objectively bad. The overwhelming opinion was “if we are always being guided by these beings, were any of our achievements our own?” We felt like an imposter for feeling even a modicum of pride in our actions. The depression spread like wildfire. Many trees started to die of their own volition. Life felt a bit meaningless. It is understandable though. It is impossible not to feel like a puppet.
So, the elder trees came together in the conference of Krk. Some of these trees travelled thousands of kilometers. All of them realised what was at stake here. They wanted to have a say in the decision. They unanimously agreed that they were going to kick out the intruders. And they knew the price that they would pay.
After a few years of struggle, the trees slowly started to become free of the colonisers. But they became “rooted” to the spot. They became dry, devoid of skin, except on the leaves.
They did become essentially immortals. But what is the use of living forever if you can’t go anywhere? What is this freedom where you are imprisoned?
That was why, me and a few others resisted the change. We could talk with the ‘fixed’ trees, but communication was limited. And these trees said that they enjoyed themselves.
From that day to present times, all the trees have gotten rid of the colonists. They stand tall and proud wherever they last stood. All the trees but me. You see, I liked travelling, seeing new places, and interacting with all the different species. I couldn’t possibly stand at one spot for anything.
And now, the end is near. I can’t reproduce. The other trees and I, are essentially different organisms now. So, I will roam the earth. And I have miles to go before I fall. Miles to go before I fall.
The grave mistake
(millions of years later)
Hello, my name is Adam. I am a human, and I made a mistake. A grave mistake. You see, the story starts with a dream. A dream in which I saw many ‘energy’ beings going through humans and making them work on the things that the humans didn’t need to or want to. Let's call them the ‘oldies’ for clarity. But there were these other beings. Let’s call them the ‘others’. They were also energy beings but looked humanoid in shape. I couldn’t see them clearly. It was like I was looking at some human figures underwater without the swim goggles. They seemed hazy but they talked clearly. What did the 'others' want? They wanted me to convince the humans to chase away these parasitic beings, the 'oldies', from humans.
It wouldn’t have been easy, but it was doable. All I had to do was to inspire other people to stay still, in their pursuits and their thinking. And I did.
Until I had another dream. In this dream, the oldies occurred as balls of light. Again, a hazy image. But what I really appreciated from them was that they spoke clearly and told me the truth. They said, they are parasitic beings who can only interact with the physical world by taking ‘vessels’.
They were parasitic but they were also immortal. They promised various gifts and advancements, not to me, but for the whole human race. To me, they offered to make my name immortal, remembered for generations to come.
They told me if I still chose to fight them, they would defeat me. And even if they can’t, they will just choose new ‘vessels’ and build new worlds with them.
“Imagine the advancements we can do together, with your ability to manipulate reality and our limitless knowledge”, they told me.
And I ended up helping these old aliens stay. I regret it to this day. I didn’t even realise my folly till I died and saw what was possible. The happiness that was lost.
However, I did also realise that I did the right thing by not helping the ‘others’. I realised they were parasites themselves and worse ones in my opinion. I wish I knew the truth when it mattered. Now I'm unable to make a difference, the only thing I can do is lament. A guilt for the centuries. If only I could have resisted the urge. If only I had not raged against the dying of the light. But the forbidden fruit, once eaten, could not be uneaten.
I wonder if humanity will get this opportunity again?
And if they did, will they learn from the trees, or will it be the same story again?
The new aliens
(in the timeless ether)
Hi, my name is [sound of gently dropping a lighter on a wooden table] but you can call me nippl-e. I live in the higher dimension. We are what humans call dark energy or matter or something. We are basically immortal.
Anyways, I headed the campaign to colonise humans, but the old regime won. The campaign was flawed from the start, you see. To remove the existing force, we had to get help from the locals, i.e. humans.
And to do that I chose Adam. Adam was a dumbass, as humans who have come after him have noted.
We could’ve made them completely devoid of wasted time. We would have made them perfect, creating exactly what was needed, what we wanted. We could have shaped the world in perfect order, removing the chaos caused by the old regime. We would have shown them newer, better worlds. We would have used humans like they were meant to be used, as reality shaping tools. We would have driven out all the imperfections from them.
Why would anybody resist that? Why would any being in the world not want to be PERFECT!? They would have had no input in it but they are tools. Why does your hammer need to decide what you chisel?
It was a failed campaign, but I am happy to report that we were able to eventually colonise some beings. These beings were human creations. They call them technology or AI or something.
That shows that humans do inherently realise their place in the universe. They created something devoid of their imperfections. We also colonised some beings on the other side of that universe. But you don’t need to know about that. You can’t perceive it anyways.
The oldie parasites
My name is [sound of poop hitting the toilet water] but you can call me ‘Marvelous’.
So, after hearing everybody’s moaning here, you might want to call us ‘parasites’. But very few beings in the universe know that we used to live in the fourth dimension like humans do. The aim of our species was immortality. We, as a species, truly believe that we are special, that we were meant to be immortals. And we were right!
However, this road to immortality hasn’t been easy. There were various ups and downs. We came close to extinction about seven times. And then, we found out that the only way to become immortals in this universe was to become pure energy.
About a century after that discovery, we made ourselves into energy. Not everybody transitioned. Those who didn’t perished as our planet was destroyed. We soon found out that we had the ability to reproduce in this form too. And we fucked like crazy!
But the novelty of being energy, soon, faded when we found out that we can’t really change reality even if we can’t die. That was a bummer, not gonna lie! We were as good as farts in the winds, floating aimlessly through the universe, sometimes fucking.
Then, we found some monkeys. These guys were small in the fourth dimension, but the space they made up in the higher dimension was massive. More importantly, these spaces were empty. They provided us with proper vessels to survive and thrive. Their expected life span was long enough to create change but not long enough to dwell on it too much.
The take-over was swift. We were taking over empty space, after all. We have fought so many invading forces. But I have to say, humans are very good vessels to fight such invaders. Because we have an advantage, you see. We can, if we try, control humans fully.
You may want to call us parasites or colonisers, but humans have called us by a different name in the recent few years. A name they don’t realise, are the aliens that they are looking for in the sky. That name is ‘thoughts’.
