The insult is outdated but persistent. It isn’t really about money — it’s about control, class boundaries, and fear of women exercising choice. In Australia, we like to think we live by the myth of the fair go. But when a woman dares to marry across social lines or claim agency in her relationships, suddenly she’s a gold-digger. Synonymous, perhaps, with social climbing — or maybe, more bluntly, with breaking the rules.
