Why some of the most valuable colleagues never solved the problem

Back when projects were still on-site, we rarely debugged alone.

-> Not because two people were required.

=> But because two perspectives were.

Often, one person was driving & The other was simply watching.

• Listening.
• Thinking.
• Occasionally asking a question.

… sometimes after an hour of debugging, the second person would quietly say:

“Did you actually clear that variable?”

Or:

“Why do you assume the data is coming from there?”

And suddenly:

Boom => Problem found … solved …

Not because the second person was smarter.

Not because they knew the answer.

But because they interrupted the loop.

In the German Air Force, the term was Weapon Systems Officer (WSO).

Two people = One system -> With different perspectives.

Mutual trust.

No competition.

No need for either person to be right all the time.

Years later, remote work changed many things.

• Efficiency increased.
• Travel decreased.

But something disappeared as well.

Those spontaneous moments:

“Can you have a quick look?”

Three words.

Sometimes worth more than two hours alone.

Interestingly, I recently noticed something.

The role itself may not have disappeared.

Only the form has changed.

Today, I often find myself discussing problems or themes with an AI.

Not because the AI always knows the answer.

Quite the opposite.

Sometimes its suggestions are wrong.

Sometimes they are incomplete.

But that isn’t the point.

The point is that the conversation starts a subroutine somewhere inside thirty years of experience.

And suddenly, a forgotten thought appears:

“Wait a minute… why am I assuming that X automatically moves into Y?”

The solution was already there. — It simply needed a ping.

Maybe this is not about replacing expertise.

Maybe it is about rediscovering something older.

Good work was never a solo activity.

• It was always a dialogue.
• Between pilot and WSO.
• Between senior and junior.
• Between two consultants.
• Between human and rubber duck.

And perhaps now:

-> Between human and AI.

-> Not to remove thinking.

=> But to help thinking think.

The most valuable sparring partner isn’t always the one who knows the answer.

Sometimes it is the one who asks the question that starts the right subroutine.
