When Your Characters Stop Listening to You

There’s a strange moment in writing when a character stops feeling like someone you invented and starts feeling like someone you’re discovering.

You may begin with a clear idea of who they are, what they want, and where their story is supposed to go. Then, somewhere along the way, they make a choice you didn’t plan for.

Maybe they refuse to say what you expected them to say.

Maybe they fall for the wrong person.

Maybe they reveal something about themselves that changes the entire direction of the story.

And suddenly, the writer has a decision to make: do you pull the character back toward the story you planned, or do you follow them and see where they lead?

I’ve always found that tension fascinating.

Because sometimes the most interesting parts of a manuscript seem to happen precisely when the author loses a little control.

So I’m curious:

Have you ever had a character surprise you so completely that you changed the story because of them?

What did they do and did you let them have their way?
