HUMAN REPLACEMENT PROTOCOL FAILURE
My Husband Is a High-Res Upgrade I Never Ordered
My husband is being replaced by a high-definition stranger, and frankly, I prefer the seasoning

Cutlery, misaligned identity — Generated with Google Gemini.
It started on Tuesday, when my husband laughed at a joke about interest rates.
Usually, such a joke passes through him like neutrino. He nods politely, then returns to whatever domestic mystery currently occupies him, such as locating a missing sock or forgetting why he opened the refrigerator.
But this time, he laughed. A real laugh. A laugh with timing.
My chest became tight.
By Wednesday, my suspicion had become full-time occupation. I began observing him through microscope of my own paranoia.
The replacement revealed itself in horrifying clarity. My old husband — chimpanzee of minor domestic chores — would crush toothpaste tubes in middle, ignore empty toilet rolls, and leave half-eaten sandwiches under sofa.
Now the impostor flosses daily with robotic precision, irons linens like professional hotelier, and aligns cutlery as though conducting silent symphony. Every breath and blink carries patina of someone else’s meticulousness, and it makes me itch.
Yesterday, I touched my own cheek and recoiled. It felt oddly artificial, as if my own face had been wrapped and placed under fluorescent light.
I stared into mirror. My lips moved with slight delay. My pupils looked like foggy tunnels. My sense of self seemed to be living in apartment I had abandoned months ago.
We continue our theatre. We watch prestige dramas. We eat. We touch mechanically, like clockwork dolls whose batteries are failing but whose gears refuse to quit.
He calls himself my husband. I call myself his wife. Names are souvenirs now, empty and echoing.
There is perverse comfort in this abnormality. No monsters, no aliens. Two humans, wrongfully inhabited, living out mistake in plain sight. The true self has become ancient scroll, too fragile to unfold.
I smile. He smiles. We pass each other silently, like ships in fog.
And yet, this is home.
The quiet horror of us has become strangely familiar. Something clearly wrong, and yet impossible to stop returning to.
