Biotech vs Biomedical Engineering vs Bioinformatics: What’s the Difference?
Three fields that sounds almost identical — but lead to very different careers, skills, and opportunities.
Biotechnology, Biomedical Engineering and Bioinformatics.
They sound similar. They involve biology. They can all contribute to healthcare and research.
But the work you actually do in each field can be completely different.
If you’re a student trying to figure out which path fits you, let’s break it down simply.
So, in today’s blog, we will be discussing Biotechnology and also the other fields that confuse most of you: Biomedical Engineering, and Bioinformatics.
🧬 What is Biotechnology?
Biotechnology simply means combining biological processes and technology to produce certain products that are useful or helpful to humans. For example — bread! 🍞
Now, you may think, “How is bread an example of biotechnology?”
Let me break it down for you.
Fermentation is a biological process, and the product is bread, which is one of the most widely consumed foods around the world.
Biotechnology is interdisciplinary, which means that it contains a mixture of different fields or subjects, referred to as disciplines.
It is an interesting mix of physics, chemistry and biology, linked by mathematics.
🦾 Biomedical Engineering
Now, if I mention Biomedical Engineering, Biochemistry and Bioinformatics, they all sound like different names for the same thing.
But trust me, they are not! Don’t worry, the confusion is understandable. Even I had it.
But let me clear this for you once and for all.
Biomedical Engineering, in simple words, is about making technology related to biology in order to assist the healthcare industry.
For example :
- Blood glucose machines
- Medical devices
- Medical imaging equipment
- Other healthcare equipment
So, the equipment used by researchers, doctors or other medical professionals can involve the work of biomedical engineers.
💻 Bioinformatics
Now, last but not least — Bioinformatics.
In very simple words, you can think of bioinformatics as biology combined with computer science and data analysis.
It helps researchers analyse biological data such as DNA, RNA and protein sequences.
Bioinformatics can help reduce the time required for research and development by allowing researchers to analyse large amounts of biological data using computers.
That’s it! Nothing fancy — this is the simple definition.
🧬 Let’s Understand It With an Example
Now, let me put all of this information together through a simple example.
Suppose there is an organisation where cancer research is going on.
What role can each of these professionals play?
1.Biotechnologist : Develops or works on biological therapies and products.
2.Biomedical Engineer: Develops medical devices and technologies that can help with the detection or monitoring of cancer.
3. Bioinformatician: Analyses genomic data and compares it with reference data to identify mutations or changes that may be linked to cancer.
