Stop Looking for Cracks in Our Sky

On loving an anxious heart.

You lift your eyes too often, love, to skies that have not broken; one passing cloud becomes to you a sorrow yet unspoken.

The evening loses none of itself because the swallows fly; still, you search every patch of blue for somewhere it might die.

"You'll leave me too," you say at times, so quietly it aches; as though my love were made of glass the slightest touch could break.

I think those words were planted long before you ever met me; by hands that closed unfinished doors, by love that would not stay.

No wonder every change of wind can steal your peace away; a heart once taught to fear the storm still waits for rain each day.

Look at the sky this very hour. The clouds have crossed before. They never carried heaven off, nor emptied it of dawn.

Do not mistake a darker day for all the days to be. The sun has hidden many times without abandoning the sea.

If ever fear should take your hand before my own can do, look not above for broken skies. Look here. I’m looking too.
