The Excuses Started the Night Before

This morning was a run day, part of my Couch to 5k Challenge.

I had already done a session two days before and was doing well, but I knew this upcoming session was going to be tough.

The night before, I was already providing excuses for myself.

My thighs were aching, so perhaps I needed more rest.

The weather was going to be hot. Perhaps I shouldn’t risk the potential of heat stroke.

I had two days off from work. Perhaps I could rest tomorrow and go on my run the day after.

I Really Didn’t Want to Go

When I woke up this morning, I still didn’t want to go.

It was early and I was wide awake in bed, squirming this way and that.

Two hours later, and after a lot of internal fighting, the battle of procrastination was finally over.

I got up, got dressed and went for my run.

The Feeling Afterward

I was walking home from my run with a definite pep in my step.

I felt elated.

I had ignored all my excuses, got out of the house and got the run done.

And that felt like a much bigger achievement than simply completing another Couch to 5k session.

Celebrating the Win

I know I’m going to face this battle again.

There will be another morning when I don’t feel like running. Another list of perfectly reasonable excuses will probably appear.

But today, I won.

And today, I’m celebrating that win.
