I Almost Let the Day Stop Me

Sometimes, getting started is the hardest part.

The First Obstacle: Technology

I woke up and decided to go for my next Couch to 5K run.

It is already tough trying to get out of the door without obstacles getting in the way.

My first obstacle was my earbuds.

I couldn’t get them to sync with my phone. I’m not sure why, but I spent quite a while trying to sort it out.

It would have been very easy to give up at that point.

But eventually, I got them working and headed towards the door.

Then the Phone Rang

Just as I was about to leave, the phone rang.

It was my dad.

He told me that the carer hadn’t arrived to take care of Mum’s personal needs. She has Alzheimer’s and someone comes to help her each morning.

So, instead of heading out for my run, I had to contact the office to find out what had happened.

Twenty minutes later, and after lots of apologies, it was sorted out.

We think they had forgotten to add Mum to the list, but thankfully, the carer eventually turned up to help.

By this point, my running plans had already been pushed back.

I Could Have Given Up

And honestly, it would have been so easy to give up on today’s running session.

I could have made myself a coffee, settled down and told myself:

I’ll run tomorrow instead.

There were plenty of reasons to do exactly that.

But I had already decided that I was going to run.

So I faced that front door again.

One More Time, I Set Off

I put my trainers on, grabbed my phone and finally stepped outside.

I went for my run.

It wasn’t about having a perfect morning. It wasn’t about everything going according to plan.

It was about not allowing a few obstacles to make the decision for me.

Today, I had to start twice.

And sometimes, that is what progress looks like.

Not an easy, uninterrupted journey.

Just facing the door again and taking the next step.
