Challenging western art canon // Originality is not a product
Challenging western art canon// Originality is not a product
I understand originality not as a product but as a relational event. For me, originality does not come from an individual producing something new and then claiming ownership of it. Instead, it emerges through encounter — through the ways bodies move, listen, respond, and attend to one another. It is something that is co-created in relation, rather than possessed by a single person.
By thinking about originality in this way, I challenge the Western art-historical myth of the lone, exceptional genius, a figure that has historically been imagined as white, male, and autonomous. Rather than locating originality within the individual, I understand it as something that unfolds between people through shared experience and ongoing exchange.
