Maybe Work Is Also a Form of Worship

In Epistle to the Colossians 3:23, I am reminded that whatever I do should be done wholeheartedly, as if I am working for the Lord and not merely for people.

Yesterday I listened to a sermon about work and ministry, and somehow the message has been lingering in my mind ever since. It was simple: maybe work can also be a form of worship. The message also reflected on Epistle to the Ephesians 6:5–9, which talks about working not only to please others, but with sincerity as if serving God. It isn’t a new idea to me, but this time it felt more personal, almost as if the words were quietly pointing back at my own life.

I started wondering why this thought keeps coming back to me. Maybe it’s because, without fully realizing it, I might be walking something similar to what the sermon described as the “extra mile.” Lately I’ve been trying to simply do my work with integrity by showing up with discipline, taking responsibility for what is entrusted to me, and not thinking too much about what others might say. And honestly, it hasn’t always been about money, even though many people still measure work by that.

At the same time, I know I am still in a long learning phase. I am still trying to become more professional, still adapting to a job that, if I’m being honest, I never really imagined myself doing before. There are many things I am still figuring out, and perhaps this season is simply part of that process.

Something else I have been reflecting on is the difference between going the “extra mile” and going the “over mile.” The extra mile isn’t about exhausting myself or working endlessly. It is about doing a little more with sincerity and integrity. The over mile, on the other hand, often leads to overworking until the joy disappears. One comes from a genuine heart, while the other often comes from pressure or the need to constantly prove something.

Maybe I don’t have all the answers yet. But if work can truly be a form of worship, then perhaps what matters most isn’t just the results I produce, but the heart I bring into the work I do each day.
