I woke beneath a white ceiling.

A narrow vent crossed the ceiling from wall to wall. A low sound came from inside it. The sound resembled a machine remembering the shape of air it once carried.

I did not know where I was.

A woman entered carrying coffee and bread on a tray. She wore gray clothing without decoration.

“Are you awake?” she asked.

“I am awake. Where is this house?”

“This is the house.”

“Who am I?”

She placed the tray on the table.

“You are the one who woke up.”

The house contained many rooms. Books stood on shelves. Utensils waited in the kitchen. A dining table was prepared for absent people. Everything possessed a use and remained inside its use.

Only one room stood empty.

The room lay near the center of the house. It had no window and no furniture. White walls surrounded a white floor. The air felt washed too many times.

I asked the woman about it.

“The synchronization comes there,” she said.

“What becomes synchronized?”

She looked at me.

“You should return before it.”

An old man cleaned the corridor.

“The room is correct,” he said.

A man sat at the table.

“Timing arrives.”

Neither explained anything.

I entered the room the following day.

The silence did not remove sound. The silence removed the obligation for sound. The vibration from the vent became distant, as if the house had swallowed its own breathing.

A sheet of paper lay on the floor.

YOU HAVE AWAKENED MANY TIMES.

The handwriting resembled mine. The resemblance existed in the hesitation between the letters.

Inside my closet, I found identical clothes and a recorder with a cracked screen.

I pressed the button.

A voice resembling mine said, “I am still trying to remember why I left this message.”

The recording ended.

I asked the woman who had owned those things.

“Previous occupant.”

“Where did he go?”

“He returned.”

“Returned where?”

The woman folded a towel. Her silence resembled a locked door.

That night I entered the room again.

The vibration from the vent reached me. Water pipes reached me. Footsteps reached me.

The movements approached one another.

My breathing approached them.

My pulse approached them.

My thoughts approached them.

I forgot my name.

I forgot the town where I had lived.

I forgot why I had arrived.

Then I understood something which had perhaps understood me first.

The woman was not a person.

The old man was not a person.

The seated man was not a person.

Their movements repeated themselves with the economy of rain falling from a roof.

The house spoke by arranging them.

The empty room remained still.

I could no longer decide whether the room had been waiting for me or whether I had been assembled for the room.

The vibration seemed older than the house, older than the walls, older than the names people used.

It passed through everyone without remaining inside anyone.

The house appeared to breathe only when its movements agreed.

Perhaps agreement was the only thing that lived there.

Nothing answered me.

The house existed around the room as water exists around a stone. The stone teaches the water where it has always been going.

The room corrected.

The difference had become too small for names.

I was not listening to the vibration.

I was one vibration.

An agreement among footsteps, breathing, pipes, memory, and the low voice inside the vent had taken my shape. When the movements met, the agreement would no longer be necessary.

The woman stood beyond the door.

“You should return.”

The old man said, “There is still time.”

The seated man said, “It is becoming one.”

Something quietly aligned inside the entire house.

I moved slowly toward the place where I had already been.

I lay upon the bed.

Footsteps approached.

The door opened.

“Are you awake?” the woman asked.

I attempted to answer.

Before I spoke, something within the house became equal to itself.

I woke beneath the white ceiling.
