The Molecular Origami of Life-Protein Folding 01

Imagine, at this second, there is a masterclass “molecular Origami” id unfolding inside our brain. This is the reality of Proteins and its workflow. But how do these proteins work?

It all begins with a simple, linear chemical string. We call it “protein Sequence”. This link around 20 types of amino acids within a high-level arrangement. Each of these amino acids is built around two key anchors:

  1. An Amine group (-NH2) on one end, and
  2. A Carboxyl group (-COOH) on the other.

When any two amino acids bind together with this amine group of one reacts with the carboxyl group of the other, then it releases a molecular of water as the result. This reaction fuses them together via a strong, covalent link called a peptide bond.

By repeating this binding process across hundreds or thousands of these 20 amino acid types, the cell builds a long, flexible polypeptide chain.

But this long chain is not just simple. Here, due to hydrogen bonds between amino acids, it automatically tries to fold below secondary structure (Alpha helix). And the way their R-groups attract each other automatically create these amazing 3D origami-like structures.

In billions of cells across the body, this folding process occurs every single second with flawless, automated precision.

But what happens if a single fold goes wrong? What happens when a protein misfolds?
